How do salons that rely on our distributors and manufactures get real tools to compete in there marketplace. How do we deal with the maturity of an evergrowing industry that is getting primary attention from the big corporate companies(franchises and big multi location chains) coming in.
As any Industry grows the independent gets less important to everyone. The USA is powered by small business. How do we keep our strength with the manufacturers and other powers to be in this industry ???

I think that independant salon and independant manufacturers will always have a role in the indoor tanning industry. Many salons are feeding their future competition by supporting major brands that have plans to open or participate in corporate stores.

I suggest you ask questions and be reach to adjust your salon to avoid competiing head on with a corporate store. You may need to be flexiable on the beds you have, your High/Low pressure mix, the lotions you stock, the types of services you offer and other aspects of your business to maximize your advantage as an independant.

I agree with Greg. Independence is what our country is based on. What scares me is not the franchise stores it is the idea that the major manufacturers of lotions, bulbs, beds, etc will become conglomerates and Company stores will come to town and put even the franchises under. Where is Tony Saprano when you need him?

Remember that these chains & franchise locations use to be small independent salons.

They didn't do it overnight.

Any salon can compete.

Here are the 2 major ways salons do it.

Pick the right location, right products, re-invest, & proper marketing can make anyone a success.

Pick Crappy beds, cheap lamps, cheap lotions, pocket the cash & go out of business.

John I have to disagree to some degree with you on this..
We have BEAUTIFUL Ultra Sun Machines I buy a new machine every year or two sometimes...
I pride myself on the finest quality lotions money can buy and we have a beautiful facility.....
IF lets say a Corporation such as ABC who manufactures lotions and beds open across the street from me......they are able to sell tans at 3.00 or give a lotion for 20.00 because they MAKE the things..
Come on now John....you know exactly what we are talking about here on this thread.......
See John no matter how much we continue to reinvest into our places........BIG GUYZ can invest more for much much less....

I didn't think you were talking about distributors opening salons.

Yeah, a distributor or manufacturer can pretty much destroy anyone or any market if they wanted to.

But look at guys like Darque Tan, Robbie started out as a little salon in Texas, look at him now. We have a local guy TNT tanning started with 4 beds in a crappy location.
Now he has 13 Locations & over 200 pcs of equipment.

Quit supporting the companies that are doing this. If the distributor owns a salon don't buy from him. If the manufacturers are doing this, don't buy from them.

I know plenty of Distributors have salons, but what manufacturers are doing this?

The intelligent small business person will always succeed under capitalism... the franchise route or corporate stores are in it for the "quick" buck...build up market share post profits and in return stock goes up and you decide to cash out...fear of "big" business is usually the inability to structure your own business to fit your specific market.
