we tell them that if they purchase a drop in, and want to purchase a package after, then we will take the price of the drop in off the package, that way they got the free tan and we weeded out the person looking for a "freebe" only.

I see points on both sides & I believe it is how you structure it.
Freaks are not my customers. I don't want people who skip around looking for the best deal.
I give a free tan with a full sized bottle of lotion, I know that they will have to come back & buy more tans to use it up, or the worst case senerio, they show up at my competitors with my bottle. (usually priced less than theirs) If they try the Super bed, it is hard for them to go back to the base beds for a package and will usually buy in what ever range they tried out.
I give my package holders (loyal customers)a free up-grade or huge discount for their birthdays... And they like it here so much, they pass out coupons & good words for us!
We also have specials & discounts available for our regular package holders (not people who skip
around)

I always tan everywhere and buy packages from other salons...I have run into employee's that when I wanted to buy 3 HP tans... will tell me that it is only $5 because the first tan is free and the upgrade is only $5.00. I was willing to spend $75.00 but instead they only got $5.00 that day.

We offer "1st Tan Free to New Customers" at our salon. The keyword here being customer. They have to buy a pkg in order to get their first tan free. How do we know they are new? Because they are not in the SunTouch database.

We only do it if someone stops to ask about pricing and doesnt buy. We will say would you like a courtesy tan. I think about 10% get the first tan free, I have pulled business from competitors by doing this.

we have always given a first visit free. we are fairly new and are the nicest, cleanest most proffesional tanning salon in town. it is a way for people to hear about us. they come in and we give them their 1st tan free and they love the place and buy a pkg. I think it makes them feel special, they get a free tan in any bed. It has always worked for us.

Thought i woudl bring this up again since we do this.. We have several tanners come that are home from school asking :Is it true, the 1st one is free: ok so I will go once.. SO iahve been doing with packet of lotion purchase it is free in the base bed! No upgrades allowed... I am trying to sway away from it but its on my business cards I orderred from Grip so I am kind of stuck right now... until Run out!

Re: First Tan Free ???

we used to do the first tan free thing - then we realized that the majority of people requesting the freebies were visiting strippers from out of town, high school kids, etc . . . . we now offer first time deals & rebate the packet or single tan price if they do buy a package or bottle first visit

Sherin, we had the same prob with having a stockpile of promo material out with the first time free offer - after seeing what 'freaks' that was attracting, we required package or lotion purchase if they wanted to cash in the free tan - have had zero issues other than one high school girl!

engfant, the 1/2 price is a good idea as well, going to look at doing that one, we are in a high comp area with one of our salons & it sounds like a good way to get comparison tanners!
