Rep Power: 22 | QUOTE: borrowed I was just watching the news this morning before church. CNN Headline News ran a story on the new tanning dill. As I watched this story I got to thinking. Is this going to be the end of our industry? Maybe? Here is the drug, injected once a year, consumer develops a tan, no multiple visits, touted as the manufacturer as a way to reduce skin cancer, and becuase it is a drug and administered by a physician quite possibly could be paid for by all major health plans. Other than relaxation our industry has nothing to compete with this. The drug seems cheaper, more effective, and less hassle than conventional tanning beds. Why would anyone not do this. How can we compete? Simple, we as an industry need to wake up and start touting the benefits of UV light and tanning, from a medical standpoint. The drug does not trigger vitamin D production, does not help with psorasis, does not help with SAD, etc. We need to start this NOW. We need to get the public educated to the benefits we offer. Now I am not a really smart guy, however I am smart enough to see when a better product coems along. This tanning drug is clearly a better product. If we are going to make it as an industry another 5 years we need to start making our product the better one through advertising, marketing etc. I for one will support any company that steps up to the plate to do this. |

Rep Power: 22 | We're TOAST!! I wouldn't be opening any NEW locations now. Not with this looming on the horizon. If we don't come together as Salon Owners, Lotion suppliers, Bed manufacturers, Insurance providers and support groups through some combined organization like ITA, we have no chance of surviving beyond 2005. As an Industry, we ALL better figure out how to put the positive spin on our services or we will all be bankrupt!! |
