We are opening a tanning salon and are going to the show next week. We have looked at a lot of tanning beds and just would like some help with what features to look for in a tanning bed. They all look awsome but what features should we be looking for in a quaility bed.

You'll have to see what fits your plan..
Are you planning to do your own maintaince on your machines? or calling in a specialist?

We have all Ultra-Sun units.... we love them..
Check out Eurgoline also..they are well bulit and Dr. Kerns makes beautiful beds....

Be sure the company you go with has good support for you..you never know when you need to call them for help..

Enjoy picking your machines.. it is an exciting time for you both.

Best wishes for success.

Everyone has their own favorites. I just happen to love my Tan America beds. Have used them for years and they are virtually maintenance free, I can change lamps by myself (without any swearing), and clients seem to really love the results from them.

But there are a ton of beds out there.......check them all out!!!!

Hi Chris,

Hope all is well. I wanted to re-confirm that the taping will take place…

I also wanted to say that I have known Don and Pat for quite some time and I could never thank them enough for the work they have done to help salon owners in our industry. As a token of my appreciation, I will do something I have done in the past to help fund their efforts…I want to first state this is not a scheme on my part to get bed sales, it’s a “Shari Jones appreciates you more than you know” type of situation.

I personally will be donating a percentage of my commission from the beds sales I complete from the Nashville Show. I would state the percentage but my percentage fluctuates so it is very hard to give an exact number.

I would like you to purchase from me of coarse, that’s one of the ways I make my living…but, I am a firm believer in giving back…giving back to an industry that has afforded me much…giving back to an organization like the TSO who has and is working for my benefit…please never forget that I am a salon owner too!!

If purchasing equipment at Nashville, please allow me the opportunity to help you with your equipment needs.

Thank You Don and Pat, see you in a few days!!

Shari Jones
Salon Consultant Tan America
Putting her money where her mouth is!
Long Live the TSO!!!

Guys we have been looking at some pubiclations about tanning beds what we want help with is what FEATURES to look for in a bed.

Yes we will be working on the beds ourselves

We have heard things like "works in a drawer" and "hinged acrylics" and would like to go to the show knowing the right questions to ask about a tanning bed. Any help is appriciated.

Hi Jeni and Mike,
(A quick “thanks” to Chris for the compliment!)

Features are important to salon owners...any salesperson at the show can show you the features on their equipment...honestly you should be asking the hard hitting questions...
1) Magnetic or choke ballast...(can I specify what I want?)
2) Ballast supports lamp properly.
3) Standard lamp and replacement lamp options.
4) Med’s reached on stated sticker?
5) Airflow used to keep lamps performing properly?
Plus seek out someone that can help give advise on how to properly equip your salon...
1) Evaluate your competition
2) Help with lease negotiations
3) Your pricing options for equipment
(Sessions, memberships, packages)
4) Understands and helps you to understand different levels.
5) Location, location, location!!!

When buying equipment personally I think you should look for someone who will give advise as if they were filling their own salon...doing for you what they would do for themselves if it were their money!

Basically purchase good equipment from someone you trust...

Hope that helps, there is so much to cover!

Have a Great Day!

Shari

Sheri,

What about hinged acrylics are they a big plus?
And what about face tanners, we have decided to go with the 360% High pressure instead of a mattress. What do you think? Should the 160watt beds have facials?

It is a great plus to have a good relationship with your bed guy/gal. We have ergo equipment and our rep is fantastic. Always available for questions and help whenever needed. Honest guy.

When you talk to the different companies ask about your local rep. Are they in your town/state? Or do they visit your area frequently? You don't want someone who just sells you the beds and you never hear from them again.

Mike and Jen, this is not a decision to make hastliy at Nashville. Talk to several vendors while you're there. Take lots of notes about what they tell you. Look the equipment over closely, and get them to explain everything about it in detail. Compare several brands for features, price, and quality construction. Form an opinion of the salesperson, you'll get a sense if they are out to 'sell' you or help you. Get them to commit to a price that they'll honor 60 days after the show. This will give you time to evaluate the equipment after you get back home; NO PRESSURE. It's all about featues YOU want in a bed after you've seen them. Remember, the more complicated they are, the more likely something will break on them. Beds now do more than tan. Are your clients interested in getting a tan, or do they want more, like aroma therapy as well? Don't by anthing built from plastic; it breaks down after time and exposure to UV. Stick with metal equipment. You can't WIN by replacing beds every 4 or 5 years. You need a machine that will last 10 years. Think long term. How easily does it appear it will be to maintain? How about lamp replacements or acrylic cleaning. Are they easy to remove? Can one person do it alone? Hinged acrylics have their own quirks and problems. Will the equipment use any suppliers kind of lamp? Some companies get you here; requiring their own proprietary lamps. BEWARE!! Most important question you can ask is, "what is the time to 4 MED"? Will the customer get the full FDA maximum erythemal dose, by the time allowed on the timer, eg. 20, 15, or 10 minutes?

Hi Myles,
Nice to meet you...

Honestly hinged acrylics can be better than what we see now...access is nice, my concern exists with the actual shock attached...if hydraulic and enclosed in the lamp area, the temp in the lamp area could cause the shock to explode...at least that is what every engineer I have spoke with about this concept has concern over.

Weather using 360-degree high-pressure or more traditional mattress high-pressure I see high-pressure a must for any salon that wants serious money making abilities.

Facials in medium-pressure beds? Good question! Before making a suggestion on that I would want to know more about your competition...what equipment they have, pricing schemes they are using and so on...

Hope that helps!

Shari
