I work in the cust. svc. dept. for a tanning bed manufacturer who, for obvious reasons, I have chosen not to name here. I'm posting this as a way to offer suggestions to those of you who have, for whatever reason, had bad experiences in the past with your manufacturer's service department.

This is not an attempt to excuse poor service or to somehow bash salon owners and I don't claim to speak for all of the service departments out there (although I bet all of us reps have alot of common stories) . Believe it or not I'm just trying to help. OK, here goes:

1) The first rule of thumb when you call with a problem should always be this- just be nice. No more, no less. Even though you may not be feeling all that nice, take a moment to collect yourself before you make that phone call. Realize that the person answering the phone didn't make your bed and most likely didn't cause your problem. Realize that you're speaking to a person who will almost certainly go to bat for you if they feel that you have shown them some respect. A smile is almost always met with a smile and agression almost always with aggression. That's not just customer service but life in general. People, no matter what they do for a living, are still people.

2) Learn a little bit about your beds and take care of them. Dust the fans every once in a while. Check your voltage on occasion. Tighten bolts, adjust your gas springs. The old saying "you can't get something for nothing" is true. The more you know about your beds, the less likely you are to experience major headaches in the long run.

3) Realize that sometimes to make money you have to spend money. I can't tell you how many people call in here after they've had a bed for three years demanding to have a fan replaced at no charge and a service technician to replace it at no cost.

I welcome any questions or comments!
