Rep Power: 0 | Hello To You All! Someone from this board suggested I post this question to salon owners. I am a disabled sunlover, who happenes to be in a large power wheelchair and paralyzed from the neck down. When I told this person that I loved to tan but can't tan year round, she asked why not go toa salon during the winter. I told her about my circumstances and that it would be too much of a hassel to find at least 2 strong friends to help put me in the bed from my chair, she suggested I post here asking owners how they would handle my circumstances: The first problem is physical accessibility to the rooms and once in the room enough space to manuver the chair. Aren't most of these rooms small? Second, would you as owners allow the people back to help me into the bed, and then at least one to stay while I tanned in case I needed something? (Remember I can't move) Third, wouldn't all this hassel take up precious turn-over time away from getting another client in and out while I was moved, undressed, and dressed? i.e. wouldn't you losse money? fourth, would any owners be willing to let me tan after hours when there is no crowd? Thanks for any and all input! Tanonwheels By the way, I'm in Northwest South Carolina. |

Rep Power: 24 | Let me ask you this.. How do you get around in your home? Do you have to have assistance getting in and out of the shower/tub? Dressed? Food? does someone get it for you and feed you? My question is do you have someone with you 24/7 to help you? You said you can't move from the neck down.. so you must need someone who is with you.. or no? We do have a couple of rooms big enough for a power chair.. but you seem to need someone to get you in and around? Who would transport you to and from the salon? We are not trained in moving a person from chair to bed.. someone has to know what they are doing or.. you could get hurt..or the person trying to move you.. or both.. I'd have to say no to us moving you from chair to bed.. I am in Fla.. but I am sure these are questions owners in your area would ask.. Let us hear from you.. ok.. Let me ask you this also.. how do you type? does someone do it for you? Chris |

Rep Power: 0 | Hey Cindy, Thanks for replying! No, I would bring the friends/help with me, I wouldn't want or expect someone I don't know to transfer me or even come in the room cause I am talking tanning naked here! Yes, I have a van that my friends would drive me to the salon in. I can manuver myself around with a chin control joystick on my chair. The only thing I would need of a salon owner besides accessibility, is extreme patience and plenty of time. As far as how I do my daily living and personal care: I have attedants who come in the mornings to bathe and dress me, then they come back at night to put me to bed. And, I type with a stick (mouthstick) that I hold in my mouth...I type like you with one finger. Take Care! |

Rep Power: 24 | Hey Tanonwheels.. you said "The only thing I would need of a salon owner besides accessibility, is extreme patience and plenty of time.".. Well by gosh if that's all you need.. I am sure you'll find a salon near you.. If you were in my town.. and you just need time and a laid back place so you would not feel rushed.. I would hope you'd come tan with us. I know you'll find a great place near you.. this is a wonderful industry.. c |

Rep Power: 25 | I do have one quadrepeligic lady that tans in one of my salons. She is a very nice gal and her husband a saint. He takes her in the tanning room puts her in the bed and presses the start button on his way out. She tans for 20 minutes, he then goes to his own tanning room and tans for 15. He then goes back in and helps her dress and back into her chair. They always come late in the evening when there is not a wait but they are very nice people and I wouldn't care at all if they took up an extra 10 minutes of prime bed time. |

Rep Power: 0 | I have had some customers with special needs. At least one of my rooms is big enough for chair and the time thing wouldn't be an issue. During busy season, we would work out a schedule during a not so busy time or after hours while I do closing stuff. No problem on our end. Pam |

Rep Power: 0 | We actually moved a stand-up unit out of our hall so there would be more room for any person in a wheelchair to make it through to the restroom. Our restroom is accesible and we have 2 rooms that are bigger also...just waiting for someone like you! Although I agree that you need to be properly trained to lift someone in and out of a chair. So if you have friends to do it..great! |
