My goal was to bring all the NAC discussions occurring separately across the industry to the top of all the boards. To get people discussing the framework, structure and how to work to make the NAC a reality. That has now happened. Clearly the NAC has it’s own momentum on all the boards.

I knew we needed to develop a way to fund the NAC. So I proposed a trade show, in the long run, I still believe that a trade show is need to raise the real money need to fund a national TV campaign. In the short run, I have developed a program to fund it with American Royal.

If salons will call American Royal @ 800-671-3141 and sign up the on-line NAC ordering program they can enjoy the maximum allowable discounts on the indoor tanning products they buy as well as the NAC will get a donation equal to 5% over and above these discounts.

That way NAC starts getting the money it needs to promote
the indoor tanning industry. That is clearly the start up funding needed to get the NAC going. Don Smith and TSO have a non-profit organization in place today to accept those funds, American Royal has agreed to give Don Smith the power to use these funds as needed. In the end, NAC must use the science developed by TSO to support it’s advertising claims to be effective.

Some salon owners have accused me of duplicating efforts, going to fast, and trying to make to many decisions for salon owners. I think they are right, I have never wanted a spot on the NAC board. I have the ability to use my power to bring people together and start people discussing these issues on ways to make the NAC happen. That is done.

The NAC should be a decision made by and for salon owners. I will support the NAC as I can in whatever form it takes.

At this point, I have done all I can do and I need to refocus on doing my work for Soakin’ Up The Rays, Inc. and allow salon owners to find there own path with the NAC.

I hope that I have helped with this effort to get NAC a reality!

American Royal which agree to fund this effort at NAC with a percentage of sales is no longer in business.

I convinced American Royal to fund this over and above the discounts it was giving salon owners already. When no one signed up then the NAC discount program so it simply died.

The NAC is still desperate needed. I joined the ITA and will now work from the inside to see if ITA will focus on this aspect of building the tanning industry.

hmmmmmmm...... a year later, on a topic that is almost as old as the industry itself.....

Funny how any group effort is a dismal failure ~ ~ Perhaps the best thing for salon owners to realize is that they can be their own positive image campaign and they can do this one client at a time....

Make your clients aware of the potential harm that your industry and their ability to CHOOSE to use indoor tanning is up against.

Make them excited about the GOOD THINGS that UVR does for them - teach them how to face all exposures responsibly and remind them to SPREAD THE WORD.... It is not just about YOUR salon and YOUR checkbook...

It's about the Industry being able to survive the onslaught from proposed Bull***** Regulations..... 25 thousand dysfunctional Salon owners (and we ARE unable to work together - so we ARE dysfunctional) is nothing compared to 30 Million Clients of tanning being told NO by the GOVERNMENT.....

Power to the People .... Power IS the People.

DAmmNIT- - a full post without smacking someone!!!!

Let's see ~ ~ ~

Greg is here... and as useful as **** on a bull for working with the ITA which is as useful as **** on a boar when it comes to proactive public advertising for the industry.....

There!

now I am done

National Advertising Campaign to help the tanning industry and fight the naysayers...great idea but no cohesion to put it all together and get it going.

Joe ~ I used to be a ---- cheerleader ----- for lack of a better word.... one that believed that we needed to fight together or Auntie Tan would win....

But now i have come a full circle = and when I saw that this topic was again being used as a tool (or is it - by a tool ?) I did some quick reading of a year back and even further....

What my point is - a National Group Effort will never happen... too many egos that want THEIR STATE to be treated better ~ **** That! but I have over 3 thousand clients in my data base.... more each day... and believe me, when I tell em what the **** is going on with their Legislature and political pressure getting applied by the American Medical Assoc and the Derms.... I have a feeling they will be CRANKY.... if 25 thousand voices of Salon Owners cannot be used as one.... I am suggesting we ALL use the power of our client base...

I am back to square one.... but no journey is a complete waste. I have learned much on the trip

I think I get it. NOW my question to you is. Which tanning companies support salons FOR REAL? ETS? Designer Skin? JA? Are these people worth supporting even though most of their product is either crap or can be bought in stores. Also, I've been in the biz for about 7 months and feel like I know more than 80% of the salon owners in the area. Now, Are these salons that are run by "carefree" 9th graders for 70% of the year going to ruin it for the rest of us? I mean, I have people (kids) coming in and thinking my equipment doesn't work cause they don't sweat to death in the beds like the place down the street. IE, they are misinformed in the whole tanning process due to these children not knowing what they are doing. Double diping, underage tanning. No good.

I think you've got it too. You are in this business because you love it and want to re-educate, or you want to be an absentee owner and assume kids behind the counter are going to help build your retirement fund.

Both of our salons were run similarly (by the previous owners) as you described above. It has been a fight to undo much of it, but not impossible. There is still much to do, driven home to me each time I sign up a new client who fights me all the way with exposure times, lotion and eyewear use, etc.

One day at a time...

Oh my GOD! Same deal here Tamar. I honestly never really been in a tanning salon before purchasing one last Nov and CAN'T BELIEVE how "uneducated" some tanners are. 20 year tanners think their eye lids protect their vision. Everyone thinks tanning salons take in HUGE money. I'm a millionare according to some people. $40 for a MONTH of service is NOT a lot of money. I don't mind educating people on how to really tan but re-educating people is tough. How irritating is it when new clients respond with "...well the tanning salon down the street..." or "...well I've been tanning for 10 years and..." when you tell them the freeking lines they get on their face is worth the $3 we charge to keep a person's vision. Now with crap like SPIFFS and some EFT caca that is DEVALUING our services and only looks like a good idea. No one seems to factor in the extra stress and depreciation on the equipment from all the usage or the fact that you are a slave to Australin Gold, a company that (from my knowledge) does ZILCH for the tanning industry and is all about selling their product to everyone and anyone. Our industry is a very unstable and misunderstood. Putting someone's well-being in the hands of teenagers is not good. Someone is going to screw up big time and we are all going to pay for it. Where will ETS be then? At your local Shaws or Shop and Save is where. I've never been so disappointed by how the majority of tanning salon owners run their businesses. Once again, I've only been a tanner for 7 or so months and my salon went from "the other place" to best in the region and it's not because I sell thousands of bottles of AG. It's because I bothered to take the time to learn and educate my people and spend some money in making my salon as confortable and interesting as possible. If every other salon followed in my lead NOONE would be charging $20-$30 month unlimited. It would be more like $40 to $50 because there is an "education value" that tanners will appreciate. They are not only tanning but learning the correct way to do it. If I ever do make it big you better believe I will be a force to be reconned with.
