Rep Power: 23 | This Just Posted on Tanday: Canadian Government Proposes To END The North American Tanning Industry! Overstated? We think not. Here is why. The Canadian National Government, operating through a division of Health Canada, the FDA of Canada, through the CCRPB, or Consumer and Clinical Radiation Protection Bureau, has the clock ticking in Ottowa. They propose a series of 10 regulatory measures. that are now on the table, pending implementation as soon as this summer. Some of these proposals are minor, some worrisome, but one, is a KILLER for the tanning industry in Canada, and is a direct threat to tanning in America too. Some background. There is a body in Europe, they are called the IEC, essentially, they are a board that develops standards for technical measurement of light, radiation, exposures, health risks, etc. They are pure ivory tower types, with little to no real world experience. Once promulgated, these so called suggested standards are studied and often implemented by the national regulatory agencies around the world. The FDA and Health Canada send representatives to these international standards meetings, and they come back with a goal of WORLD HARMONIZATON, or global Big Brother knows best. Most of those attending have NO real understanding of the impact the standardized regulatory issues might have, and truth be told, there are many in these organizations, here and in Canada, that WANT to end our industry. And some of those seek to use the smokescreen of international harmonization to accomplish that end. In the proposed Canadian regulations is ONE TIME BOMB that will kill the Canadian tanning idustry, and by extension, embolded OUR regulators to seek the same standards for harmonization, thus killing us next. Unlike socialistic Canada, our regulartory process in the USA, has many checks and balances, they do not. There, the health people just decide what they want to do, go through the moves of taking input, and impose regulations, regardless of politics. It is just DONE, and you have to comply. They don't have outside pressures, once a few people decide to tell you what the rules are, they ARE the new rules, and you comply or face strict penalties. The KILLER regulation is a MAXIMUM ANNUAL LIMIT on exposue to regulated UV emitting devices [read tanning beds] of 25,000 Joules per Square Metre. OK, since we don't all have time here to become Don Smith, and pull out our sliderules and charts, what this means, in practical terms is: No more than 30 standard base level tans per YEAR, yes, read that again, PER YEAR! And the bigger the bed, the fewer allowable sessions to achieve that maximum limitation. Essentially, Health Canada is going to put Canadians out of business, or force tanning out of honest regulated salons, into sleazy back office bucket shops that break the law, or into home tanning, where the government will not be able to enforce these regulations. Now, TanToday asks for a RESPONSE TEAM of Canadians, Americans, salons, manufacturing firms, and others who should work together as a working team, to organize a groundswell of opposition to the pointy heads, let the Canadian government know the impact this will have, the junk science behind it, and the thousands of jobs that will be lost. This is NOT a Canadian thing. Our FDA will seek to follow, and some in the FDA right now, are on the global harmonization theme as we type this. There are Canadians who are right now, representing Provincial Tanning Organizations, like Ontario, Skatachawan, and Quebec, that are organizing, seeking support, more awareness, and whatever assistance US readers can bring to the effort. Our manufactures and suppliers all sell into Canada, they have Canadian distributors, and many customers there that will be affected WHEN, not IF this law is passed, and it will be without a massive, IMMEDIATE, and SUSTAINED outcry from the entire North American tanning industry. Our tanning organizations, the ITA, SAE, NTTI, ISTN, and all the trade publications need to focus immediately on this issue, all websites, readers and concerned salon owner, manufacturers, vendors, and others need to understand, that what happens in Canada is what many seek to have happen here. This is YOUR FUTURE if the world harmonization police have any say. The time is NOW, the place is HERE, the issue is REAL. More as this develops..... __________________________________ Tan Talk ModeratorTanTalk Rocks!!! Rep Power: 24 | This should be a test case to see if the lawyers can turn this into rules preventing workers from being exposued to the sun while working. If the government can say this amount of exposure is unhealthy. Then outside worker have a right to expect not to exposed to unhealty conditions on the job. This is the time for everyone to step up for the good of the industry. |

Rep Power: 0 | THE UNFORTUNATE PROBLEM HERE IS ALSO THE EGOS THAT ARE INVOLVED!! I had asked, that given the FACT that in Canada we do not have the caliber of the likes of Don Smith or Steve Makin of Solarmeter to represent us, that we request assistance of either or both Don and Steve. I was informed that the meeting, held this past Friday May 10, was open only to the "PRESIDENTS" of the provincial associations. WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP THAT WAS !!! It is not uncommon, nor embarassing that certain associations are presided over by presidents who are elected not so much for their intensive knowledge of every detail but for their ability to represent overall. To this end it would not be out of line to recognize that certain aspects, especially technical aspects, are above and beyond the realm of knowledge held by some PRESIDENTS. To that end I say that looking to "outside" tech support would have been the appropriate way to go given the representatives' lack of technical expertise. I personally contact3ed Don Smith and requested his assistance. True to form Don did not hesitate one second to agree to help. The powers that be however, rather than fight tooth and nail to have Don recognized as our technical representation, decided to play their game by themselves and hope for a postponment of any descision until they could get their act together. What a load of crap !!! This damage has already been done, we look no less useless to our government than did the Australian board of representatives that sat seemingly idly by while their government made the descisions that the government felt were right and that's it !! The fault is not all that of the representatives of the Ontario Association. THE SALON OWNERS THAT DID NOT SIGN UP ARE AT LEAST EQUALLY TO BLAME. I warned you all in a letter sent by myself to my customers and incorporated ino the initial address by the OTA sent to ALL salons via each distributor that what we were in fact fighting for was the ultimate survival of our industry. Far too many salon owners decided to save the pennies it would have cost for membership and so we are left with zilch ! Nada, no real representation to speak of or worse, representaion with no one to represent!!!! GET OFF YOUR WALLETS AND JOIN NOW !! THIS IS NOT A JOKE, NO LONGER AN APPEAL, BUT A LAST GASP PLEA FOR HELP FOR YOUR INDUSTRY, WE NEED YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO GET OFF THE GROUND OR WE WILL BE SHOT WITH OUR PLANES IN THE HANGARS. |

Rep Power: 23 | Mori, please let me know if there is anything American salon owners can do to help the fight in Canada. Unfortunately, my resources are limited at the current moment. But, you'll never find a mouth as loud as mine. If you need someone to throw a fit, I'm your girl. Let me know if you need me. |

Rep Power: 23 | I dont get it the tanning industrie in canada is hardley regulated right now. So what are they all going to come down on us at once? There are many junky salons up their. What they need to do is have those cleaned up and follow stricter rules. But not shut us down. For christ sakes. |
