This is in response to a PM sent to me. While the post was meant especially for the person who asked me, I will still post it here for general info.

It was stated that they do not always use a lotion, and that they receive a sun burn when they tan. THey have been allowed to tan for 20 or thirty minutes at a time.

********

You should always use a lotion. It is better for your skin and better for your tan. Remember that while tanning does not necessarily cause cancer, it can cause premature wrinkles and gives skin a leathery look and feel if not properly cared for.

Are you going to a reputable tanning salon? They should not allow you to burn, if you are actually burning then your skin uses all of it's resources to heal rather then tan. This is why it is important to start slowly then work your way up to the maximum time allowed on that bed (generally 20 minutes).

Brown Sugar is an awesome lotion, however, it is also a "hot" or "tingle" lotion which can give the feel and appearance of becoming sun burned. This redness and hot feeling should subside with in a few hours at the most. If this is the case then you my not be actually burning. YOur salon rep. should have explained the importance of starting with a step one lotion until you have a base tan, then progressing to a lotion such as Brown Sugar.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask, or better yet post on one of the message boards. It can then be answered by advice and suggestions by myself or others, some with much more knowledge and expierience then myself.

You did it. Instead of cliking on "post reply", you click on "post new topic".

If the redness disappears a few hours after tanning, this client was probably sold a tingle lotion. If the redness shows up several hours later, chances are it is a burn from overexposure. Tan smart, never burn.

Any salon owner who is going to tan someone or should I say burn someone, because the customer insist on the full time.....(And we al have been there) Should hold his or hers ground.
IT IS YOUR SALON YOU ARE LAIABLE AND RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR BEDS AND YOUR CUSTOMERS.
THE ANSWER IS NO.
Part of her problem she is constantly over exposing herself. Therefore, her skin barely recovers from the last round of too much UVB is my guess, and she is back at the salon insisting for more..
Wondering why her tan is creeping along???
hmmmmm
Well, It takes weeks for your skin to recover from a sunburn long after the reddness has faded away. I am concerned for her skin and highly suggest she take a look at SmartTan.com as well as some of our threads on Tantalk concerning this issue.
If this particular person is concerned about wasting minutes in on a visit package ..find a salon that offers minute packages.
TAN SMART, don't BURN.
Borrowing from tamar>>LOL
I would also suggest using a bronzer to satisify the I want to see color right now attitude.. and take the tanning slower.
ohh and try... Total Immersion from CalTan it will also help maintain your tan as well as hydrate your overexposed skin..
