FYI:

My choice for the "worst post EVER made" (and most damaging to the indoor tanning industry!) was made by the infamous "Rod" (Mike) of "Pub Section" fame on the "controversy for the sake of controversy" board today.

The title of his disgusting post was ""Burning someone on purpose" and it asked the question "... do you purposely give them a longer exposure time so that they will see some color?" and then follows up with the incredible (and actionable!) statement that "I have purposely gotten (given) a few a little 'color' to satisfy them ... not too much, but a tiny bit ... What about you?"

I have trouble believing that a tanning salon owner with an I. Q. over 70 would even THINK such stupid thoughts and it is beyond my comprehension that anyone would actually post these disgusting and morally reprehensible words for the world to read!

He is stating, in essence, that he sunburns some of his clients "purposely" without their knowledge and/or consent! He is admitting that he "willfully" and "purposely" damages some of his clients!

An incredible and incredibly stupid statement!

Let's hope someone from the State of California (or FDA) reads his post and takes action to IMMEDIATELY close down his tanning salon because it constitutes a "clear and present danger" to some of the clients who patronize it. No client ANYWHERE should have to worry about being "purposely sunburned" by a stupid tanning salon owner!

What a disgrace!

This is yet another "black eye" for our industry courtesy of the "controversy for the sake of controversy" website (where "Rod" is a Moderator!).

Don

PS: This makes my decision to quit posting there 5 months ago look real smart, doesn't it!

Added later: Even worse, this disgusting post was made in the "New To The Industry" forum where people new to the industry come for information!

I could say the same about salons that use High UVB {burning lamps}, so clients "think" they are in a "stronger" bed.
Its the norm for salons to tell and sell and mislead clients on these so called "HOTTER" "stronger" {lamps} beds.
To say they have more effective beds then the compatition, or to use these burning lamps as an "UPGRADE" higher cost for thier clients.

So slight burning of clients is used to cash in by some salons.

I beleive it will be the slope to the downfall of our industry.

NO BURNING, the forgotten reason for UVA tanning.

Chippp:

The practice (which I do not condone) of advertising "hot new bulbs" pales into insignificance when compared to bragging about sunburning your clients ON PURPOSE.

This flies in the face of everything responsible tanning salon owners stand for!

welll, that pales in comparsion to the "Punk in Drublic" thread... they brag about doing their clients and so on.... I check out what goes on over there from time to time but hey...they are losing it.
Purposely burning clients... buying sex with a drinks and free tans.. man..... what a shame!... that they are attached to this industry. And have the nadds...POST IT!!!!
I am doubting their IQ Levels myself.
I think they Blew their wadd and burned the remainder of there brain cells out on the educational posts that I once seen over there. They are now sharing the remaining cells...
Just my opinion.

Hey - it is my best friend Don Smith... the guy who follows my every word... I think this guy idolizes me... he practically stalks me on the internet...

Anyway - I did not do as Don has stated...

I asked if anyone has allowed someone to go a little longer than they feel the person should have because the person wanted to and didn't care if they burned... I have never burned anyone - they burn themselves - and I would never put someone in for a time where I feel they would get burned without them explicitly requesting it... When I start people out at my salon, I almost always start them off so sllloooowwwww that they complain they are not seeing anything the first few times, and I explain that it is good. But - I know myself, and me being extra careful - I do tend to put people in for much shorter time periods than they probably would be able to handle... so the ones who want to burn, I let them tan for a little longer than I normally would, and many times as a result they do see a bit of pink, that goes away the next day... I also explain to them, if they are pink - then do not come back until it has gone away completely... I also explain to them about burning, the dangers associated with it, and the proper way to tan...

So Don - take your beef elsewhere... You are just upset that people would prefer to listen to me than to you... Can't wait to see you in Vegas... I am going to hang out with you all night long and there is nothing you can do to keep me away from you... I am going to tell everyone I am your son... and you are my pops... Even people who don't know me... I just might introduce myself as the son of Don Smith...

I bet I get all the ladies when they find out who I might be related too... what a party animal they will expect me to be... I will whip out a meter and ask them if they would like me to stick it in the places the sun don't shine until I turn it on... bet they will love that... sexy Don... oh god I am so excited... will my UVA+B solarmeter work Don... or shall I get a bigger, stronger one so I won't let your girls down... you big stud you... I bet that is the first time someone has called you a stud... how did it feel?

FYI:

It's hard to respond to someone with the I.Q. of a stump like "Rod" but I'll try.

Evidently "Rod" takes exception to his own words. He said "I have purposely gotten (given) a few a little 'color' (sunburning is NOT the "color" that responsible salon owners are selling, Rod!) to satisfy them... not too much, but a tiny bit (a sunburn is a sunburn is a sunburn!)... What about you?"

Well, Rod, the "What about you?" question can be answered very simply. Any tanning salon owner answering "yes" to your question should get out of the business!

However, I don't blame you for trying to "distance" yourself from your own incredible and incredibly stupid words because they show how TRULY unprofessional you are.

Your title "Burning someone on purpose" said it all!

Please let me know when your salon is closed down.

Don

PS: You ARE NOT on my list of people to spend time with!

Don - while I agree that my post should not have been moved into the New To The Industry Section if it implied to anyone that I thought it a good idea to purposely burn anyone without there consent - it is a fact that this occurs purposely or accidently and this happens all over. You seem to not understand, that while I can and should include my experience in order to talk the person out of what I feel may be too long of a time - I should NOT be the deciding factor on how long he tans for. He should be. He is the one who is spending the money, he is the one who came to my store. He filled out a waivor, I have my DANGER - ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION signs in the room that warn of overexposure. He should be the deciding factor, and as an adult and an american who is able to make choices from his own freewill that God has given him, he should most certainly be held liable for his own actions. If he purchases a Ferrari - and decides to take it to the limit, and he crashes - it was HIS FAULT. Not the cars, not the manufacturer, not the salesperson who sold it to him. I am a business owner in a capitalist society that is trying to keep the consumer happy by providing a service for him. My goal is to create a need that he and thousands of others will seek out, and to charge money for it so that I may prosper. It is my responsibility to know within reason the power of my equipment on the various skin types, and make recommendations based on that experience. In no way - does that make me nor any other operator an expert. Since we are not an expert and licensed as such, we certainly should not have the authority or expectation to protect the public from harming themselves beyond knowing the potential of abuse from our equipment and warning of the possible damage that can and may occur from abusing it. Does that mean that if a skin type one wants to tan twice in a 32 lamp bed equipped with 9.5 Panthers that I should not be able to stop him? Yes - I should, because I know the performance of my equipment and know beyond a shadow of a doubt that this is considered abuse - and since I am the owner of the equipment, I should have every right of ownership including who I feel may use it. It does not mean I should be forced to stop him though. I should only make suggestions from my past limited experience, and while I may have strong reservations against letting someone do so - If I have openly expressed those concerns and have even gone so far as to make him sign a waiver that states he has been warned very strongly against using the equipment for the time period he is choosing - HE SHOULD BE LIABLE. If I go to the liquor store tonight, and tell the cashier that I want 2 gallons of Vodka because I am going to drink it as rapidly as I can in one setting - he certainly should not be held accountable for my stupidity, and he most certainly should not hinder my choice by refusing to sale the items unless he is making a moral judgement... either choice he makes should not be his responsibility. So IF a client chooses to go longer than I would recommend because HE WANTS to spend his dollars and see 'some' color - then that should be his choice and his responsibility. This is America - people smoke, drink, have unprotected sex. One regulation in any area opens the doors to more regulations diminish our freedoms that people better than YOU and I have died for to protect.
