Coming up with price to sell salon?

Hi,

I am brand new to the forum. I own a franchised(licensee) salon that has performed pretty well with positive sales growth every year since we opened the doors 3 tanning seasons ago. I was hoping I could get some help on here on how to come up with a sales price for the salon. The salon is debt free, great corner location in busy women's shopping center, established/loyal clients low rent relative to other similar locations. We are hoping to make a little on the sale. I have heard that it is a multiple of net profit and some say you could sell as an asset sale. Any help here would be appreciated!

thanks

What Is Your Prefered Way To Get Tanned?

_*As someone new to the forum, who isn't a business owner but would love to hear your thoughts on the alternative ways of getting tanned and the best way, in your opinion, to get it, I thought this thread would do it.

As far as I know, the alternatives to get tanned are:

- Being in the sun
- Using a tanning bed
- Using spray tans
- Using tan lotions
- Using tanning pills

I can imagine that most prefer being in the sun and getting it the 'normal' way, but I live in Sweden and there aren't many months to do just that, plus that I've always had it difficult to get tanned.

Tanning beds damaging the skin, so I wouldn't consider it worth it. Even though I've done some in the past with positive results.

I've never used spray tans, I have used tan lotions though. But it wears off after taking a shower, and it's hard to put it on the back, and when I do my face I tend to get some acne - which I don't have otherwise.

That leaves me with the option tanning pills, the question is though: Do they work, and what would I be using then?

What are your ways of getting tanned? Have I missed any alternatives? Is it possible to get a "permanent tan" in any way, or at least use an alternative that lasts very long?

I'm not sure if all of this have been covered in the past, but I'd really appreciate as much feedback as possible.

We have 350 sq ft in a commercial building with separate entrance.
We are in the Central West Coast of Floirda (Tampa Bay area)
We are looking to open a Tan Salon.
The rent is covered by a doctor's office. We need to do something with the empty space. The space has four rooms and the front office.
We are looking for a business plan.
We already read that tanning business is down every where.
What is the most expensive ticket item monthly for tanning business?
rent equipment or buy equipment.
How do we calculate break even?
lots of questions in our mind
What is the law about tanning? Will The FDA shut everybody down?

Does anyone ever figure out your own hourly wage?
Take the amount of personal draws for the year divided by the hours you worked for the year.
Had a "little" down time yesterday and figured this out...not fun! I didn't included any money taken out of the cash drawer for lunches/coffee etc. But that little amount is not going to bring the "hourly wage" up much.
And of course that is no PTO (whats that?!)
So far in 2010 I have a higher hourly wage..but JA*SON* is here and I will be working a lot and taking no draws!
And there are a few pros...

*_Wasn`t sure this was the right place to put this but here goes. If you aren`t already a member of the ITA you still have time to get your vote in. Join today so you can vote. They are mailing out ballots Sept 1. We need Max on this board. Folks I am not just being one of his cheerleaders here this man truly cares about this industry. Vote for MAX_*

*_I realize we as salon owners cannot vote in this sector but talk to the people who can. Max told me there are 50 industry leaders that vote. Talk to them about voting Max in. _*

Dear Fellow ITA Member:

I am writing to you today to notify you of my candidacy in the Non-Salon Sector of the Indoor Tanning Association.

As you know the elections are just around the corner and you will be asked to vote for your Representative in what is now called the Non-Salon Sector. There are five candidates running for three positions and I must say each of these candidates is uniquely qualified to represent us in this important election. John Overstreet has previously send these materials to you.

Today - I am asking for your consideration in this election.

My background is as follows:

1) MR International, LLC. is the largest Cooperative in the Professional Tanning Industry representing more than 900 Professional Tanning Salons throughout the world. Most of our Members and Owners are names you are very familiar with and are also active participants and economic supporters of the ITA.

2) I have served on the following Boards - Cosmetic, Fragrance & Toiletry Association, Canadian Cosmetic, Fragrance & Toiletry Association, Founding Member of the Look Good Feel Better Program for Canada, Sun Pharmaceuticals and California Tan. I currently serve on the board of the Cardiac Kids Foundation of Florida. I have been a Member of: National Association of Chain Drug Stores, Grocery Manufacturers Association and Food Marketing Institute. I currently serve on the ITA's all important PAC Committee (Political Action Committee).

It is from these unique experiences that I believe that I will be able to contribute to our Association as we face the many challenges that lie ahead.

3) The issues we face: 1) the Tan Tax, 2) Pending FDA Regulations, 3) the Economy and 4) the continued negative attacks from the Press and our Adversaries are complicated and will require the efforts of all ITA Members.

4) Commitment to the ITA and our Industry - as you may know - Max Recone and the MRI Membership are strong supporters of ITA activities. We have pledged $12,000.00 to the ITA which is four times our Annual Membership dues. Our Salon Members represent more than 250 of the current ITA Salon Sector Members. We have required all of our key industry suppliers to be Members of the ITA.

5) Communication - we have actively encouraged the ITA to increase its level of communication with its Membership and we believe that this is steadfastly improving. This will be a major focus of my efforts as I truly believe there is a lot of good work being done that is often never heard about. I will also serve as a point of contact for all Members and actively seek their input for strategy and ideas.

In conclusion, you have a number of highly qualified candidates to consider, the challenges are greater than ever before and it is going to take all of us to pull together to insure that this great industry is protected now and in the future.

Thank you for your consideration!

Since I started my spray tan business I had flat rate for a full body spray tan considering I'd use approximately 3oz of solution. However, for the larger body frames I need to charge more because it can take almost double the solution. What is the problem? I have a hard time telling the client that is expecting to be charged the advertised price that is 10 dollars more because of his/her size. Also the prepaid packages I offer are also Tailored for the standard size person that 3oz of solution will do and not the bigger size. Therefore I also have a problem explaining that they need to pay more on a prepaid package. Please! can someone one tell me what is the best why to advertise my prices. Is it the best to advertise price like this: Full body airbrush $35-$45 price is determined by solution used. (or should I say price is determined by body frame size? Please give me your opinion on this matter.

I recently got promoted to store manager at the salon I've been working at (yay!). However the owner has a very poor lotion selection in comparison to other salons in the area, and there are about 5. Most of our clients come in with their own bottles that were purchased somewhere else (Wisdom is the most popular brand they use and we do not carry it). Some of our lotion selection includes: Swedish Beauty 'Swedish Intensifier', 'Dark Escape', 'Denim & Diamonds' and Australian Gold 'Mood Indigo', 'Scientific Velocity', 'Sinfully Black', 'Puppy Love' and 'Kiss Kiss'. I've told the owner several times that we should really up our lotions esp in the high salary area that we're located in, but that's a battle I cannot win. Does anyone have any really good selling tips to get these lotions off the shelves? I'm trying very hard and I don't want the owner to think that I'm just sitting behind a desk all day not giving a ****.

Okay, I have an opportunity to purchase a salon in town. It has been in business 5 years and is a combo tanning, mani/pedicures and hair salon. It is beautifully done and is making money. Equipment all paid for and all stylists manicurists have a signed lease which the owner gets $2000 a month from them. It is 2800 square feet, 8 ergoline beds 1 hand held spray tan. Also, 1 room built out for massage or facialist or whatever. The rent alone is $4200 not to mention other overhead. The build out cost $80,ooo and the equipment $62, 000 5 years ago. The current owners are wonderful people but they will tell you they haven't spent anytime advertising. Any advice will be helpfull. Thanks

So, I've decided to leave this forum for good. Many of you will say good riddance, but before I go, my $0.02:

1. This site is now full of a bunch of pansy *** mobile spray tan fools who are doing NOTHING but destroying the UV industry with their ******** propaganda machines. Most of these trunk slammers have web sites that openly bash UV tanning, yet they are allowed to learn and grow from a forum made by AND FOR UV salon owners.

2. Most posts are useless "Thinking of starting a new trunk slamming business, but how?" The only reason I come to this forum anymore is for the classified section and to see what Matt A is selling.

What a shame. Used to be lots of valuable information being shared here. Now, the only thing I get from this forum is enraged. This joint needs to called "SprayTan Talk - Trunk Slamming Business Owners"

Have a great day, if anyone needs me, I'll be across the street.
