Electrical

In my new salon I have 2 beds that require 3 phase, 30amp breaker, minimum #8 wire. These rooms are being built to someday put bigger beds in.

Should I run the #4 wire now or just stick with the #8? I already have a 360 HP and Sungate being installed. The beds in question are Heartland 5400's. I'm not sure that my market will require me to have more of the big beds but I would prefer to be ready now if business dictates more big beds are needed.

I guess the big question is, can I use the #4 wire on a bed that requires #8?

Re: Electrical

Yep!!!!!!!! You can always go with larger diameter wire. #4 is good for 80 amps. I would however fuse it at whatever the bed calls for , in your case 30 amps.
The breaker/fuse's main function is to protect the wire. Your next decision is whether you want to go with buck boosts(if needed) that can handle an 80 amp load instead of addressing that problem later.

Re: Electrical

YES!!!! ALWAYS GO BIGGER!!!! You will be able to run that bed till it melts and the wire will still be ready for the next "victim".

Re: Electrical

FYI, 30 amp only needs #10. You can allways go bigger but if that is all you plan on putting in that room then save your money and run #10.

Re: Electrical

Plus, the wire now will be cheaper to buy than it will 1 year from now. Not to mention the cost to do the rerun. Copper is getting so high too.

Do the manufatures generally cover themselves by saying "minimum #8" when really all that is needed is #10. Future says minimum #4 for the Sungate. Would that be the correct size or is it overkill?

Re: Electrical

#4 for sungate? I have a #0 run to the ICON although I have it on single phase which is probably the reason.

Re: Electrical

# 4 for a Sungate @ single phase is fine. The bed draws less than 70 running amps, and is fused @ 80 amps single phase.

Re: Electrical

The length of the run can make a difference between the gauge required also. Some voltage drop can be experienced.Three phase obviously needs less than a single phase setup.

I don't understand why the majority of these new beds are setup for single phase. If it can be run on 3 phase,I always go that route.
