Let me see what I can do to help you out. I sell spray on tan equipment and will do my very best to be as unbiased as possable
There are 3 basic types of Spray on Tan Equipment
1 Airbrush- A small Compessor driven system orginally designed to do small detail painting. The air carried the solution. Traditionally the solution is applied in a circle pattern. Can by used to do body sculpting
Pros- Less expensive to get into as a general rule. Small so it is easy to transport and store
Cons-As a general rule it takes longer than an HVLP/LVLP to spray a client and uses more solution to do so. The overspray tends to get everywhere. You usually have to have your client stand and be dried off with a fan. Can to hard to get the solution on even. If it doesn't go one even it will not come off even (clients end up looking like leopards as it fades)

2-HVLP/LVLP-Turbine driven spray system modified from professional spray companys. The Turbine presurizes the cup witht he solution so it isn't atomized as fine as an airbrush so so don't get the "solution cloud" Quite a bunch of the salons that started with an airbruch system are upgrading to an HVLP/LVLP. Can be used to do body sculpting. The new generations LVLP's have less hose and are less noise. There is 2 different types of guns Bleeder and non bleeder the bleeder has a constant flow of air so your client doesn't have to be fanned dry. The non bleeder doesn't have the constant flow but you can pull the trigger just so far and just get air to come out
Pro's-Less solution and time needed to spray your client. Minumal overspray means less waisted solution and less time cleaning it off of your salon. Solution goes on in a straight motion so it is not as hard to get even.
Cons-a touch more expensive than an airbrush. Longer hose than airbrush

3-Booth-A large automatic spray solution
Pro's- REALLY FAST, No tech needed to apply
Con's-EXPENSIVE, you need to make sure your staff educates them what to do. The Ross from Friends "spray tan" is so funny because it happens. You can't do bodysculpting. Used the most solution as any of the options. Isn't mobile.

Everyone has thier favorates so ask yourself these question
Your Budget
Your Space available-does the room need to be dual purpose
Warrantee
Do they have a free trial
Do you feel comfortable calling the supplier with every liltle question you have.

If you can, go to a trade show and check them out. There is a post here on upcoming show see if any are near you. Some of them the exhibitors can get you free tickets to get in so check it out. I believe it is in the open section.

I don't know what the rest of you did when you were deciding on equipment, but I didn't take anyones word for it..I took there words and compared my own personal experience.

My best biz advise is "TRY" before you buy and take a pal with you.
Learn all the pro/cons as stated above and see what fits your staff/spa situation.

You may want to be different and offer a customized situation with your airbrush: example:
Package plan with personalized exfoliation a light hydration message and then a airbrush treatment. (?)
OR
You may want the in and out approach: The booth is great for this: first training is a little time consuming, but once their trained the pop in and out they go. A little clean up for your staff and ready for the next guest..

Do you want to spend $30K and up or under $1k?

Do want to hire an extra tech for personalized airbrushing Or have someone just to clean a booth and do light training?

This is just a few questions you need to ask yourself, but the real experience and decision is

GO HAVE LOTS OF SERVICES DONE FOR YOURSELF. YOU be the judge! You having the services done yourself is the best money spent! Having a pal go along also give you great info on how different skin types accept services also...

You will learn alot about: The dos, the don'ts...What you want and what you don't want...

IMO: Mystic booth is great for quality & advertisement (they spend alot) and for handheld: California Tan's HVLP Custom Bronzer 4000.

Solution: HandHeld: Breeze and California Tan Premimum
Solution: Booth: Mystic Prem or California Tan Prem. Dark
All just my personal experience: 14years worth: LOL!

The problem I am finding is that I cannot find any training on spray tanning. Any one know of any in the midwest?

To answer questions, we are not going with a booth, our budget is around $300-$400. Is there any good equipment in this price area?

AND I live in a very small town, we don't even have a stop light! I can't find anyone around who does spray tanning, which can be good for business, but bad for trying out equipment. I've looked with in one hours drive time.

Are there any shows in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, or Illinois area that anyone knows of?

Everyones got really good opinions, except I am not sure if I really should get the Wagner Spray gun from HomeDepot as someone PM'd me about....any one got results with that? I would think it would be unprofessional to spray someone with that.

If you can up your budget a little, you can get an Apollo Whisper from Tampa Bay and they will walk you thru right over the phone. They have other units cheaper but this one is nice and quiet.They do have units that are in your price range. I have mentioned my favorite solution in other threads, I will say you do not need to pay over $100 for a gallon of GOOD solution.
