I had a customer ask me the other day what amount of exposure is a tanning bed gives you versus the sun. In other words, how long in the sun would equal this long in a tanning bed?

Personally, I think that would all depend on the lamps you are using. UVA/UVB ratio, hours of use and so on. I really don't think there is a definite answer to that one. I like to tell clients that 20 minutes are "equal" to 3 hours in the mid-day summer sun. True? I don't know, but it makes them happy to get an answer.

From all the information that i have seen, you only get UVA and UVB from a standard type of tanning lamp. The only lamp that i know of that emits UVC is a high pressure facial lamp, so it is a lot safer to tan in a machine than to tan outside. Because according to what i have read about UVC it is extremely harmful to human skin, and if i am not mistaken this what they use to steralize food and water.

I also give them the 20 minutes equal to 3 hours of sunlight exposure. I also tell them this is a very rough guideline as the sun varies from the beach of Miami to the Bahamas to here in Michigan (where I no longer think the sun exists. ):-)
