I've got my MED numbers collected, I just haven't gotten them all calculated for exposure times yet. Thats my next step of information release. Hope to very soon. Based on my recent readings, I've made a lamp order to re-lamp my BED 4. Can you guess which lamp I'll be putting in it???

I've been extolling the virtues of the Light Sources Aurora series since they came out. See the Midday Sun readings at 800 hours? Told ya so.

Define "new." I don't take readings right out of the box. Those first few hours are all over the place and not typical of the lamps' output for 99.9% of its lifetime. I've seen UVA in the 60s for some 160 watt reflectors when brand new. Take the reading at 20 hours and you'll get a more representative reading. Then 30% down from that would make a good replacement point.

If Light Sources is now making the Genesis lamps, then I'm absolutely stumped on its relatively poor showing. It could be Sun/Ergloine said to Light Sources, "Make these lamps' output fall off the cliff just like when Voltarc made them."

That's right, especially for 160+ watt the "new" readings are not stable for some amount of hours.

I have heard wait until the mercury balls stop swirling, ~10 hrs for 100W and up to 50 for 160W.

Gene,
Sun/Ergoline has everyone making lamps for them. The ones he has may be made by OSI or SLI.

Also note that the Radiance lamp is made by LSI & the Kern lamp is made by Lighttech Hungary.

Also LSI uses a couple different phospor blends, None better than the Aurora Series & Signature Series. So it may just be a cheaper phosphor, that doesn't hold up as well as the Midday Sun lamps.

As far as life on lamps go I usually tell customers to take 20% off of the manufacturers suggested life for 100w lamps.
For 160w lamps take about 25%-30% off suggested.

So if a 100w lamp is rated for 800 hrs - 20%= 640 hrs.
For a 160w rated at 800hrs - 30%= 560 hrs.
I think that these are more realistic numbers.

John, I would say you are right on target for MOST lamps, as far as the percentages are concerned. BUT, when it comes to the Aurora Midday Sun lamps, my measurements would attest to their better-than-average retention of output strength. I was really surprised they held their strength so well. They (Midday's) came in that Sunsource bed we got from you guy's. You obviously weren't cutting corners by using these lamps in in your URI line of beds. I was so impressed with them, I ordered another set for my Sundash bed that was needing to be re-lamped. I've gotten them installed now and the initial readings were about 19-20 total UV taken, with the 5.0 Solarmeter. I'll meter them again at about 50 hours to establish my baseline numbers for future reference.

I re-lamped Bed #4 a few weeks ago with new LSI Aurora Midday Sun lamps. It metered at 19-20 total UV when new. It now has about 20 hours on it and I metered it again today. Consistantly got 18.5 total UV after about 5-6 minutes runtime, measured at 25cm from the bench. The 7.0 meter read 11.8 MED/hr, so my time to 4 MED Te is a little more than 20 minutes. That gives me a Tt (time to tan) of about 15 and TTB (time to burn) of about 20 minutes.

The clients are raving about this bed now. Everybody wants to use it and the hours are accumulating quickly!!

I plan to monitor these lamps until change out later this year. I'll update you as more is known about their aging progress.

edited for grammatical errors..

I am curious about the mercury balls you were talking about. I have a couple of beds that have black balls inside the bulb floating around. What is this? I have had tanners ask and I really don't know.
