The real advantage to using electronic starters is realized on 160-220 watt lamps. The standard philips s-12 is fine for most operations at 80-100 watt. The electronic starters act like a programed start providing a precise amount of preheat time to the filament, this helps stop the lamp end from turning black and makes the filament last.Remember you can have new lamps but if the lamps are black customers think they are old.[ This Message was edited by: lampman on 2002-11-14 11:02 ]

There are different starters at different prices because not all starters are the same !!!!!!!!!! Look carefully BEFORE you buy.
If anything, buy two types and put one set on top and one set on bottom and see how lamps respond.... then tell us about it here.[ This Message was edited by: Mori on 2002-11-18 11:10 ]

Are there different electronic starters for different wattage lamps, or are there just different manufacturers?

Also, when an electronic starter starts to fail to function properly, does it not light the lamp at all or does it blacken the lamps also. In other words how do we know when to replace them?

Thanks

They just won't work. Yes, different manufacturers... different qualities.
