They're not like the flicker type starters (S-12). There ARE different qualities... hence different prices. My suggetsion... pick a few different types put one type in the canopy, another type in the bed, try them out for quality differences.

So what would make one electronic starter better than another?

Quality of components inside or something else?

Could someone please list all the manufacturers, prices, and opionion of the quality of each?

Thanks, Dave

As with any purchase, take time to look at the product information and ask questions of the vendor. See who else offers a similar product and see if they will give you references. Talk to someone using the product to develop your own opinion. Make a side by side comparison if possible and make your decision. Personally I went with the Optistart 8 as mentioned here previously. I got to talk to a couple of salons who had purchased them and gave good reports on their results. I installed 64 of them this evening in 2 of my Tanses beds. 1st impression, looks good all lamps came on as usual. Time will tell on this 'improvement'.

Oh yeah, I meant to say, I believe Lampman has the handle on WHY to use the electronic starters. See his comments here. I put them in my 160 VHR beds but don't plan to put them in my 100 Watt beds. I plan to install them in my SunCapsule soon.
