A starter is roughly $1.25. One starter is used for each lamp to start the lamp, after that, it serves no additional purpose.
Soooo why would you change your starters when you change your lamps if all of the starters were working before? Do you change your ballasts with each lamp change? So does a starter just go out, or does it slowly wear out? If it wears out, does it effect the life of the lamp that it is lighting in any way? and does moving your starter to the next lamp periodically help prolong the life of your lamps, or wear your lamps evenly if this is the case?
I would really like to get the low down on this issue. I don't just change my starters JUST BECAUSE, and if I should change them then I'd like to know just why, since I would be spending an additional $37.50 per bed. Is it really worth it? I'm not a cheapskate, I just want some intelligent reason why I should do this and spend this extra money. [ This Message was edited by: viptanner on 2002-02-20 22:17 ]

As a starter ages it takes longer to light a lamp. What happens is the filament take the abuse of more pulses before it lights or a longer preheat voltage time. This is what causes lamp ends to get black. The balast has no moving parts but a starter has a stt of contacts that age and dont work as well.Would you rather change a 1.00 part or a 10.00 lamp. Its just like an oil change in your car.You know the oil is in the engine and the gauge says the pressure is ok but you still change it every 3000 miles, why? because it is used and is a lot cheaper than an engine
