Because he's a mod and we ask questions like these even if they aren't relevant to us personally. Besides, it's a good question. And not applicable to me either, but now I'd love to know how often others change their starters. I think they covered this in Vegas during the class I was struggling to stay awake in and now I can't remember. I do remember that certain parts only needed replaced when they actually failed, while other components needed replacing after a number of hours.

I have heard that it is recommended that you change the starters when you change bulbs.
Now do we do that? NO. We only seem to change them when a bulb won't start. If you have a starter that mis-fires (won't completely start the lamp), yes I believe it is hard on the lamp. For a little "buck and a half" item, you should be changing them at least every third bulb change. -------------------- Viper Jon@phiper.fws1.com |

Brian,
Do you still have to replace the starter after the 6000 hours? Or at that point should you wait until one goes bad? What is the best way to check to see if the starter has gone bad instead of trying to change a lamp? |

Laurie, I have had a few starters to go out and have learn that if i turn the bed on and switch the lamps around right quick it is easier than changing out the lamp only to find the starter is bad... Did I make sense?

6000 hours seem abit much but then again i am not an expert,i would think 800-1000 hours seems reasonable i have had them kill a few fairly new vhr lamps for me and the starter had only afew hundred hours.one way that starters go bad is they "get stuck".symptoms of this are the ends of the affected tube glowing, usually with an orange color of some sort or another but sometimes with a color closer to the tubes normal color if arcs form across the filaments.occaisionally, only end arcs and glows brightly, and the other end glows dimmer with a more orange color.please note that this is hard on both tube and ballast, and the defective starter should be immediately removed.should one or both ends glow with a bright yellowish orange color with no sign of any arc discharge surrounding each filament, then the emissive material on the filaments is probably depleted or defective.in such a case, the tube should be replaced regargless of what else is wrong.if both ends glow a dim orange color, then the filament emissive coating may or may not be in good shape.
