Could you please explain further about the research YOU HAVE PAID FOR? Seems to me you may indeed be a dermatologist instead of a salon owner. Where is your salon located and do you have a website? I'd be interested in taking a look.

Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims

Yes the request for information must be a sign of me lobbying for the Dermatologists against indoor tanning campaign. Come on??!?!?!

As a salon owner I was simply wondering if I am the only one that believes that the promotion of Vitamin D and tanning as a pro health option is not the only way to go. No one can object the positive affects of Vitamin D and the ability to retrieve this vitamin through tanning. But wouldn't the promotion of responsible tanning be the better option? Especially since from my experience the majority of tanners use our services for the purpose of vanity. It has been a while since I have had a customer ask me any questions regarding Vitamin D, but I guess thats where I let them know where they can learn more. Thats why I have the literature and website in my salon.

My option to remain anonymous is by choice, we are all on this site for the same reason I hope, and thats to be better educated on tanning.

Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims

Aceboogie I do agree it's not the only thing to promote. I used to get so excited about Vitamin D that Don would set me straight and tell me to not forget the most important thing to remember is the biggest benefit of our business is that we sell photo-protective facultative pigmentation (tan). Vitamin D is not the only health benefit it's just the latest greatest thing you can do for your health. I actually think the further studies of how tanning and P53's will do even more for us. You seem very happy with your current customer base. I'm not happy with mine, I want my clients coming in and feeling good about their health and not guilty for walking into a tanning salon. I want the persons that have been scared to go near a salon for fear of skin cancer.

Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims

\darn, sorry I missed all this this afternoon, but salon was too busy for me to jump back in here, did have a returning client come in today, made me smile while all this was going on, she is a DOCTORS WIFE, has always tanned with us, as has her hubby, in the winter to increase their vitamin d levels, but she is back in tanning now because she is 3 months pregnant, and is doing it for the Vitamin D ......

Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims

WOW!

This thread is maddening. Aceboogie, I don't mean to insult you (too much), but while you might know how to sell tans, you are a blazing idiot when it comes to knowing about UVA, UVB, tanning lamps, and it looks like pretty much anything when it comes to vitamin D and UV light.

Maybe to keep it short, I'll just state that Dr. Holick used TANNING LAMPS in most of his vitamin D tests. Let me repeat... TANNING LAMPS. That should say enough, but in case there is any doubt that tanning lamps cause our skin to synthesize as much or more pre-vitamin D3 as sunlight, there is a detailed paper coming out shortly in Photochemistry and Photobiology that details how and why most sunlight exposure is less efficient at producing vitamin D than tanning lamps Dr. Holick used, much less typical tanning lamps used today.

If salon owners can't be any more knowledgable about the fundamentals than this, how the **** are we supposed to educate the general public and combat the misinformation of the dermotology community?

Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims

Thats good news about the doctors wife! however I think you will find it hard to keep your salon open with 1 customer a week coming in for the advantage of Vitamin D. ANd I am not sure if you read what little information I did provide, but it said i am LOOKING TO GROW, GROW, GROW! Thats why I remain annonymous. The last thing my salon is going to do is close down lol.

The point is being missed here, THERE IS NO DOUBT ABOUT THE EMISSION OF VITAMIN D THROUGH TANNING!!! We all understand that! The question was in regards to the output of UVB in newer tanning beds. The second question was, is there anything else we can promote BESIDES or ALONG WITH Vitamin D, that may be more effective at attracting customers who are scared of beds.

Eileen, that topic of tanning and P53's sound interesting. Any links you got where I can read up on.

Tanfixr what are you talking about? Catch up to the conversation, where past that! How about I start an easier form for you, where you and your friends can talk about the most obvious stuff ever, and feel smart! You sound like homer simpson when he goes to Dr. Nick for medical advice. Long story short it is not a good idea when trying to prove a point. How about what bulbs where used in the test?
How bout posting the link to the article so we can educate ourselves to. The problem is regular salon owners, myself included attempting to give advice that should only be given by professionals! Our opinions ARE FAR TO BIASED. You should let people decide for themselves by providing them with necessary resources to learn more (tanningtruth, uvadvantage.org, etc.) . No offense but I would shoot myself before I took cancer prevention advice from a tanning salon owner. For tanners who are concerned, you would be suprised how much research they are willing to do to learn more. You should try doing what I do with the PC's in the lobby. if your worried about people surfing the net, just firewall all other sites.

Better yet if you have an email list (which i hope everyone does) Why dont you email blast relevant articles to your tanners weekly. You will find that providing them with information (like I do) is much more effective then your 21 year old behind the counter.

Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims

LOL, good one.

Anyway, for one test, Eurosun S3 lamps were used, which have a lower Deff/Eeff ratio than most tanning lamps. The question regarding UVB in "newer" beds has already been answered. I'll post the abastract for the vitamin D and sunlight article as soon as it's available.

BTW, one thing about tanning and vitamin D is that it is not necessary to get a tan in order to create vitamin D. But if a person has gotten enough UV exposure to get a tan, then they have produced adequate vitamin D.

Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims

Yes, a tan is a side-effect of the body regulating Vitamin D. Odd huh, but makes sense. And all these years we were told that a tan protects us when in fact is mostly the exposure itself that conditions the skin. Like a chef getting used to hot pan handles, but their hands are not tan! So a tan is a good gauge for most, but my "tan" asian friends burn about as easily as anyone else. Its like when I took a red-headed client and "tanned" them. They burned REALLY easily so we took it slow and built up their time. They never really got tan at all after a month of tanning, but they did not burn on vacation. They were in total shock and aw.
