Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims
Ace, I am not sure where you are getting the info that new beds put out less uvb. it really doesn't matter if a lamp is putting out 5% uvb or if it is 3% uvb. Percent is a releative term. A bed that is 160 watt vhr may have lamps that put out 3% uvb. You can have a 100 watt bed that may have 5 or 6% uvb but in the end they will put out very close to the same amount of uvb.
You may ask how is that possible. It is possible because the maximum amount of uvb a bed can put out in a tanning session is 4 meds. So if that 160 watt vhr bed reaches 4 meds in 12 minutes, that all the time a bed can be used for a session. If that 100 watt bed reached 4 meds in 20 minutes, the session is over with. One bed reached 4 meds in 12 minutes, the other 20 minutes but in the end they put out very close to the same amount of uvb. Bottom line is that 4 meds is 4 meds, whether you get it in 12 minutes or 20 minutes. The difference between these beds are the amount of uva that each one put out, with the vhr putting out much more. The only exception to that is a High Pressure bed. Some of these have uvb at 1% or less. There are only a couple of beds that are that low in uvb. Most of the HP beds are in the middle in the uvb out put. These beds are putting out 2-3 meds per session. There are some HP beds that are higher in uvb ans they are going to hit the 4 med limit just like the low pressure bed do. Last edited by HOT STUFF; 05-09-2008 at 06:37 PM. |

Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims
Thanks again other person that joined the conversation so late! Question has already been answered. I believe neon answered it best. When he has a customer that tans for the purpose of Vitamin D, he recommends they use an older unit.
And quick question to anyone? As home tanning units become more and more affordable, wouldn't it make sense for someone with a Vitamin D deficiency, or person/persons that are worried of vitamin D difficiency be better off purchasing there own unit? Especially with mulitple family memebers it becomes even more cost effective. Especially since one has to keep it up for life, I would consider a home tanning unit to be a smart purchase for anyone with that concern. I dont know about you, but I would like to stay in business! |

Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims
If you put the units in the hands of home users it's going to be to difficult to monitor how many persons are getting overexposure. A professional tanning salon is there to make sure this doesn't happen.
I disagree that neon answered it best. I tan once a week in the Matrix L33 and get all of my Vitamin D. As I mentioned before you can get a meter from Solar Meter and monitor this yourself and it won't cost you much to do it. :)

Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims
That was the most Miss America Beauty Pageant Answer I have ever heard!! Eileen I am actually very dissapointed that someone with so much insight into the industry could give salon owners so much credit!! You are assuming that all salon owners a) actually care, and b)No what they are talking about especially when it comes to over exposure.
I am sure someone who is seriously using the bed for Vitamin D purposes is already health conscious enough not to make a silly mistake like over exposure. If the belief that home tanning units were unsafe in the hands of so called "non-professionals", they would be banned by now. It is hard enough convincing the masses that tanning beds are safe in the hands of so called "professionals". |

Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims
I should add that not all salon owners have that mentality, I know several industry professionals who are very knowledgable on the subject. However I am sure everyone can agree they are few and far between

Quote:
As far as tanning beds in the home. OK we'll use your so called idea that they are better off in homes. Now you have a teen daughter and she sneaks all her friends in to tan and 3 of those friends get they idea they can tan 3 back to back sessions and get a really awesome tan.... BURN. You might find this happen in some salons but people will always break the laws and they should be penialized for it, be it in court through monetary settlements or just revoke their business license.

Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims
OH MY Aceboogie you really screwed up now didn't you? I wouldn't be surprised if you lost your job over your unprofessional tactics. I called you out on being a fake from the get go but played along with you for a while to help educate you some about what I've learned. You come here and now you want your account erased and what you've done hidden from everybody? You should have thought about that before you started insinuating we as professional salon owners don't know what we're talking about. Wow
Bryan I would want my history hidden as well. If you want to publicly apologize for posing as a salon owner then I won't post your full name and what company you do work for. I also might not call your boss to let her know what you've done here.
