Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims

Guess she's not sticking around for a free education on Vitamin D and tanning. I like to think the many customers that I've gotten to start tanning for the benefits of Vitamin D (like myself) are not all so shallow to only handle this as a vanity business that helps to feed it's reputation to the general publics eye along with dermatologists.

Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims

I think the point is being missed here. UVB is needed for Vitamin D production. Not much is needed though so an HP is still fine.

However if you are tanning solely for Vitamin D my salon recommends the lowest level which has the highest UVB output compared to the other units. This can thus reduce your session time as you may not be tanning to get tan.

Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims

Thanks for everyones insight! I guess this topic will always be taboo until we have 100% proof.

I have placed 2 PC's in my wating area with the home page set to tanning truths website. it costs a little bit more, but it is a great way to keep tanners informed. If anyone can recomend another site of value it would be very much apreciated.

Eilleen I really do apreciate the insight, your right I do not have a degree in Dermatology. Out of curiousity then where did you study Dermatology? UCLA, Yale? I I I have had several converations with Dermatologists (http://www.aad.org/) and have once again found mixed reviews on the subject. I recomend attending the 2008 convention of Dermatologists in San Antonio, Texas. In fact there are several dermatoligist convetions scattered throughout the United States in which you will find evidence for both sides.
And to accompany those 3 binders, out of curiosity, how much information do you have on the other side of the argument. One can only be truly informed by knowing both sides of the subject. And it seems that no one has any real insight into the other side as well.

I believe that negative attention to our industry is in large part due to the lack of professionalism from industry memebers in the past. Although this is only my third year of owning my salon and I am sure I have a lot to learn, I encourage all to do what I have done and research both sides extensively.

and how can a moderator control an open forum. We are discussing openly the topic of Vitamin D, yet my posts are being removed. Seems like thats what the problem with the industry is today. Instead of keeping an open mind, we only feed people what they want to here.

Posts are not being removed, you are posting too fast for us to keep up! LOL New users have all posts go into moderation, the first 25 I believe, to reduce SPAM and other such things. Once you post count is up they will not drop into moderation mode!

Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims

High pressure, low or high UVB really is not an issue. If you are getting a tan you are getting the benefit of increasing your vit. D levels.

Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims

Aceboogie I think your idea of putting PC's out in the front lobby is awesome. I have only shyed away from this because being a computer tech person for over 14 years I don't want to take so much time protecting kids or anyone else on the internet when it could come back to sue the salon if something goes wrong. But I do love the idea. I have read so much from Dermatologists where do you think I developed my opinion from in the first place? It's from reading so many of their articles claiming how tanning should be banned. Do you think they would spend so much money telling you how vain and dangerous botox treatments are? Highly unlikely....that would hurt their bottom line.
Aceboogie here is my challenge to you. Can you produce to us the one unbiased scientific study that shows tanning moderately "DOES" increase your chance of getting melanoma?

Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims

Also one other question Aceboogie, it's starting to appear that you might own a salon. I'm wondering why you didn't register as a professional salon owner instead you listed your business as "other".
