Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims

No problem you came here with the question....but seem to have all your own answers. :) You've confused me.

Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims

Aceboogie I represent the other 80% of clients that don't fill out your survey because they won't even walk through your front doors in the first place. If they read or hear about the health benefits of tanning and Vitamin D you might start getting that other 80% and turn your $2000 a day into 10K a day...... your choice. :)

Not to confuse you but I never walked into a tanning salon until I was over 40 yrs. old. I happened to research the benefits of tanning indoors and it changed my mind.

Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims

You can find the article by following the link below. I like this article cause it MAKES SENSE!! While it adresses the importance of Vitamin D (which we all love), it also adresses the reality of the situation regarding the beds. Did you know that new beds emit more UVA then UVB in order to reduce burning? Well UVB is the major source of Vitamin D

This article has been backed by uvadvantage.org. And the UVA and UVB subject has been adressesd my manufacturers (solaria show in Euroope)

I to research the vitamin D issue to a great extent.

any response on the previous article yet? I like how it adresses the importance of Vitamin D and tanning, however I like even better the fact that it adresses the REALITY of the units. I can only post the research i had PAID to have done in order to understand this subject better.

Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims

he said. "The new, high-pressure beds have taken out the ultraviolet radiation."

this is a quote from the article...... um....if there is no ultraviolet light, just how is it tanning people? Guess the good Dr. Cannel better do more research. And if you are learning from articles in newspapers, or on the net, you can't beleive everything you read.

Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims

Why everyone is so angry, I am not sure. I was simply wondering if anyone had researched the topic extensively. Based on the responses I am going to assume not at all.

I find that the subject of Vitamin D is far to incunclusive to prepare an argument for either side. I was simply stating that although I have literature to adress the topic, I try to avoid promoting the notion of health benefits till I can guarantee 100% that it benefits my clients. I was encouraging all to do the same. Based on the research I PAID to have done, this was the response I got:

"To follow up on the article I sent to you last week about Vitamin D and the sun, I spent a good part of the weekend and today researching to see if there is any talk of tanning beds providing the same benefits as sunshine.

The overwhelming scientific research & articles say that indoor and outdoor UVR exposure are not equivalent. When reading articles about Vitamin D from Tanning resources, they inevitably talk only about UVR exposure in general, or broadly mention the difference in the types of rays and the overall capacity of beds to emit similar ray ratios to the sun – they don’t mention that while this is possible to do, it is not common practice with today’s beds. The reason that today’s tanning beds aren’t the same as being in natural sun is because they are calibrated to reduce the percent of UVB rays and intensify the percent of UVA rays the lamps emit in order to get a deeper tan and reduce burning (which you already know cuz you’re all SmarTan trained! ;) ).

Why’s that important? Because research is showing that it is likely the UVB rays that are essential to creating Vitamin D in humans so, 15-20min exposure a few times a week to natural sunlight is the overwhelmingly preferred choice in Vitamin D research, with the exception of food intake & supplement use which come second and third in preference. Still all articles stress the importance of responsible sunshine exposure, meaning that burning should be avoided and sunscreen should be worn to prevent over-exposure.

I am continuing to compile articles as a hard copy file, so if you are interested in reading more, please feel free to come by and borrow some reading!"

If you read that the universe was created by a giant spaghetti monster, then you would believe it?

Re: Dermatologists fume at tanning industry claims

High pressure tanning uses lamps of much higher power (up to 2,500 Watts each) and a very low percentage of UVB (less than 1%). The theory is that with little or no damage to the skin caused by high UVB exposure, it is easier for the gentler UVA rays to provide a healthy looking tan in as little as three 15 minute sessions. And with no protective thickening of the skin and no exfoliation, this tan can last for two weeks or more. Some manufacturers go even further with this theory in that their systems filter out not only most of the UVB rays, but also the higher frequency rays in the UVA spectrum.

hope this helps.....
