Re: Where's adam.sand?

Sucked ***... worst decision I ever made. Sold it to the gym for what I owed on the beds, went from make $6000/mo to $600 so I was still the best person for that salon. Ultimately that location has basically become a West Edmonton Mall overflow gym. The juicebar guy went out of business, the gym is slow except for peak WEST ED times because people drive the 10 minutes towards there to avoid the rush here. I sold to him and set up a lease for a nail salon. Which is why I got out of there more or less penalty-free.

Any other possible mistakes you want to poke at to try and make yourself feel better? :)

Why take appointments? If you have a VM with 320 messages backed up, it doesn't seem like it is working. There is not a salon in the country who switched from appointments to walk-in who hasn't found they make more money, accommodate more clients, and reduced workload for staff.

Re: Where's adam.sand?

I don't know, I guess if it aint broke dont fix it? It took about 7 months to get 320 voicemails.

The issue is I look at it from my point of view, if I am going to make the choice to come to this mall and find parking, I want to know for **** sure there is a spot for me. The matrix was booked up 12 hours a day 5 days a week, and about half booked on the weekends. I feel that not booking appointments just risks wasting my clients time? Perhaps if I bought a THIRD matrix I could accomodate that style but I really think if I abandoned my clients ability to have guaranteed slots, I would lose business.

You lose business by someone who can't get in at 5pm on the dot - and so doesn't come at all rather than being there and being willing to either wait or use another piece of equipment instead

You lose business by booking the room for a 30 minute slot (5 minutes to get undressed, 15 minutes to tan, 5 minutes to dress, 5 minutes to get back there and turn the bed around for the next appointment) when in fact a client might come in, undress in 35 seconds, start the bed up, tan 12 minutes, be back out in under a minute, staff turns it and the next person is in within less than 20 minutes -- making it possible to tan THREE clients that hour, rather than the 2 set up for appointments.

You lose business by customers getting frustrated when they can't get through on the phone to make their appointments - so find another salon.

You lose business by new POTENTIAL customers getting frustrated when they can't get through on the phone to find out information about your salon - so they find another salon.

You invest in a fancy phone system to handle all these frustrated callers at an increased cost to your business.

You invest in extra staff time spent answering phones -rather than selling or cleaning.

Appointments make less money for salon owners. Period.

Re: Where's adam.sand?

You present very valid points. The only thing I am concerned about is that most of my clients:
A: work in the mall and need to come on breaks, and thus cannot just walkin.
B: Don't work in the mall and West Edmonton Mall is the busiest parking lot in CANADA and thus parking is always an issue, nobody wants to deal with parking here unless its a for SURE.

I see companies like Apple (a highly innovative company) doing appointments for everything from purchasing products, to servicing, to simply being educated on products offered and it works fantastic. Sure, you have to book, but when you DO book, you know you can go in and expect to deal with someone. The online appointment book is something I wish more software providers would offer so that you can have the best of both worlds, now that everyone has smartphones they can book from a mobile format while still allowing staff time to clean. Leaving the phone open for more inquiries.

The voicemail is full cuz we get so many **** phone calls and people try booking and cancelling by voicemail. We switched from Telus to a VOIP phone (not happy with it, suggest against it) and would you believe that it took THREE HUNDRED AND TWENTY voicemails before we could get the thing full again!? Amazing.

You wanna get in, call until you get through. Otherwise we have people booking spots that are already taken. We are too busy cleaning beds, selling lotion, taking calls to be checking voicemails for cancellations. My CUSTOMERS are aware of this circumstance and know that we dont keep a voicemail and thus make sure to call in to cancel. Pretty simple policy, but you guys keep it up!
