Smile They are coming around....

They (the medical profession) are "coming around" and agreeing with the "optimal" blood level of vitamin D (25-OH-D) that I first proposed over ten years ago (that was universally criticized by the vitamin D "experts").

The optimal level I proposed was >150 nmol/L (60 ng/ml) to maintain "optimal health" and >200 nmol/L (80 ng/ml) for therapeutic use (i.e. to treat disease). [Note: I now believe that the therapeutic level should be >250 nmol/L (100 ng/ml).]

Here is what Dr. Hyman had to say in a recent (and very good) article (click on link below to access this article).

"Get tested for 25 OH vitamin D. The current ranges for “normal” are 25 to 137 nmol/L or 10 to 55 ng/ml. These are fine if you want to prevent rickets – but NOT for optimal health. In that case, the range should be 100 to 160 nmol/L or 40 to 65 ng/ml. In the future, we may raise this “optimal” level even higher."

Feeling "vindicated" today

The science is undeniable. However, the medical industry will never say that is it OK to tan in a tanning bed run by a member of the general public....

Re: They are coming around....

An "oldie" but a "goodie" that exposes what drives the dermatologists. Worth the read if you want to understand the anti-tanning zealots.

And here is a new article titled "America Is Getting the Science of Sun Exposure Wrong" and subtitled "Why U.S. dermatologists won’t base recommendations on skin color" that is well worth the time it takes to read it. Once again, it exposes the "head in the sand" mentality of dermatologists in the USA.

Re: They are coming around....

This article titled "Vitamin D Deficiency or Skin Cancer? How to Handle Sun Exposure" proves (once again) that doctors are a wealth of misinformation. His statement that "I want to help you find the balance so that you can get enough sun to increase your vitamin D, without getting too much and increasing your risk for sunburn or skin cancer." was followed by a failure to point out that the UVA (primarily UVA1) wavelengths stimulate photo-protective facultative pigmentation. Why not? Because folks with (a) natural dark pigmentation or (b) acquired/adaptive facultative pigmentation (a.k.a., a "tan") don't require the use of sunscreen.

Re: They are coming around....

Great articles.I remember when the huffington post article first came out.It actually featured audio, you could listen to the derms lie.But the audio disappeared.......

The aussie article is very, very good.I like the part when they basically say we are too stupid, err ,they don't want to confuse our feeble single digit IQ minds with the information that black people can tolerate more sun than whites. And why have you know your skin type? After all it is easier to have a single unified message that sunlight is just terrible for every human regardless of skin type.

I can't believe the derms are so stupid that they actually think that no one can see what they are up to.

But one thing that the doctors do agree on.The derms are very, very powerful with all the cosmetic skin care $$$ backing them.So powerful that they have just accepted the position that they will privately recommend sun exposure to save their patients health ,but publicly they will say ...supplements.

Re: They are coming around....

Click on the link below to access a long but VERY good article titled - "Vitamin D, Sun, Skin Cancer."

Centuries ago, when Vikings and other European seafarers took to the high seas for years at a time, they pioneered new trade routes and they mostly died of skin cancer. Native American Indians, living mostly outdoors, also mostly died of skin cancer.

What?

You never heard that? Right. Because it didn’t happen.

Here are a few things that really did happen:

In the 1980s, dermatologists began warning about the dangers of sunlight. Their advertisements were heavily funded by the cosmetics and sun screen industry.

In the 1980s the current triple childhood epidemics of asthma, diabetes, and autism quietly began. Rates of cancer and other chronic illnesses began to escalate.

In 1989, the American Medical Association’s Council on Scientific Affairs warned about the dangers of sun-exposure, advising mothers and children to “stay out of the sun as much as possible.”

In 1999, the American Academy of Pediatrics warned mothers to always keep infants out of direct sunlight, use sun-protective clothes, sun block, and make sure children’s activities in general minimize sunlight exposure.

In 2000, it was documented that rickets – vitamin D deficiency – is making a comeback in American children who drink less milk and more juice and sodas.

Today, we have escalating rates of cancer and chronic disease. Many say hiding from the sun’s rays, and living with the subsequent low levels of vitamin D, was one of the tickets to that train wreck.

For reasons that should be obvious, I LOVED this statement. "Think Twice Before Slathering That Sunscreen. The active ingredients of sunscreen are many times less efficient than melanin at dissipating the sun’s rays into nonreactive forms of energy. Sunscreens block your skin from producing the pigment melanin. This prevents your body from employing its natural defense against overexposure to sunlight – a tan."
