Lightbulb Anti-vitamin D article refuted

This article refutes the recent study by a New Zealand researcher claiming that vitamin D is useless. [Note: Lots of good information in the full article. Click on one of the links below to access.]

Stop Vitamin D, Surely You Must Be Joking?
by Jeffrey Dach MD

A study proclaiming Vitamin D is useless and you should just stop taking it was published in Lancet this week and “went viral”. The news story was picked up and amplified by the media Here it is:

“The take-away message is that there is little justification currently for prescribing vitamin D to prevent heart attack, stroke, cancer, or fractures in otherwise-healthy people living in the community,” says lead study author Dr. Mark Bolland, a researcher at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.

Randomized Controlled Trials vs Other types of Studies:

A common gimmick used by Drug Company sponsored studies is to claim that only RCT (randomized trials) are to be included as “evidence”. The Bolland report selected forty RCT studies to conclude Vitamin D is useless. Dr Bolland conveniently excluded all the other basic science and observational studies. There are thousands of observational studies that show health benefits for Vitamin D. A search for Vitamin D in Google Scholar yields 2.2 million published articles. Mark Bolland has excluded 99.9% of the available information on vitamin D to arrive at his conclusion that Vitamin D has no health benefits.

Michael Holick MD:

Dr. Michael F Holick, a vitamin D expert and author of the Vitamin D Solutionbook, says this is just “silly”. He points out that many of the studies in Bolland’s Lancet paper used doses of vitamin D that were too low to be effective.

Re: Anti-vitamin D article refuted

Why do we want to keep reading and learning about the vitamin D debate out there? We can't talk about it in our salons, nor put it onto our websites.
The information about the positive effects of vitamin D are all over the net, yet we can't share this with our clients.
I don't even want to learn about vitamin D anymore for fear I may accidentally share the exciting information with the wrong client.

Anti-Vitamin Propaganda Hits a Fever Pitch

"Unbelievably ignorant propaganda now spews forth from the forces promoting toxic drugs for prevention and treatment of disease."

"The scant science they cite is ridiculously inappropriate for the conclusions they have reached."

Re: Anti-vitamin D article refuted

The "propaganda" is not ignorant, it is the shrill and desperate attempts to try to stem the growing tide of evidence against the medical and dermatology industry. They know that their assertions go against the scientific facts, much the same way as climate change theories go against the facts on the ground. The climate change nuts want you to believe that the cold winter we are having is really the result of global warming, and the dermatology industry now wants to try to convince the world that vitamin D is now all of sudden not needed. To agree with the need for vitamin D would be to agree to the need for sunlight which of course would make them look like the fools that they are.

Re: Anti-vitamin D article refuted

Here is an article we wrote in 2008 that was originally published in Looking Fit magazine. Now, however, most vitamin D experts recommend ingesting a minimum of 3,600 IU's daily.

The information on RR (Relative Risk) and AR (Absolute Risk) is still current and important.

"Health statistics usually are presented in terms of relative risk (RR) for the simple reason that larger RR numbers are more likely to capture people's attention. However, showing a 100-percent increase in RR can be misleading when the "base rate" of the disease in question is left out." Note: This is especially true for CMM articles.

"Case in point: A British report showed that oral-contraceptive pills posed a 100-percent increase in the relative risk of developing a potentially fatal blood clot. This incomplete and misleading information led to a mass panic among women who opted to stop using this form of birth control. As a result, there were 13,000 more abortions in England and Wales in the year following the report-which contained only the RR information, i.e., a 100-percent increase in the potential for developing a blood clot. Had the public been informed that the absolute risk involved with taking the birth-control pill only increased the possibility of developing a potentially fatal blood clot from one in 7,000 women to two in 7,000 women, the public probably would not have overreacted in a such a way."

A (mostly) positive article by Dr. Tim Oliver from the UK.

Top cancer doctor says you SHOULD have a sunbed session

"Current medical advice is to cover up in the sun, but I believe the health benefits of exposure to its UVA and UVB rays greatly outweigh the disadvantages, even if that means using a sunbed during winter months."
