help me reply to this Professor

proffessor elliot was the chair or spokes man for COMARE, the body or group responsable for the publications that britain and europe has based some of its decsissions on sunbeds recently.

I wrote to him on the issues of vitamin d, i guess like most of the medical he does not get it,

can we get some fact together to enlighten him and his group, this is where i need your help,

this is his reply

Thank you for your email.

COMARE produced its report on the health effects and risks arising from the exposure to UV radiation from artificial tanning devices in response to a request for advice from the four UK health departments.

COMARE undertook a comprehensive and balanced review of the available evidence (including Holick’s work his papers are referenced), which included engaging scientific experts in this work. The committee made a number of conclusions based on the evidence and could not recommend the cosmetic use of sunbeds. One of the conclusions made by the committee was that 'the practice of using sunbeds to synthesise vitamin D is not recommended due to the potential carcinogenicity and the high frequency of acute side-effects....the benefit of sunbed use as a source of vitamin D is outweighed by the risks'. The committee noted that increases in vitamin D reached a plateau after a few sunbed sessions and that not all subjects showed an increase. It was felt that nutritional supplements should be the preferred route for increasing vitamin D levels. The classification of sunbeds as carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer has provided further support for these conclusions.

You may be interested in the advice from Cancer Research UK on Vitamin D:
'The amount of time you need in the sun to make enough vitamin D changes from person to person. It also depends on things like skin type, time of day, time of year, and where you are in the world. But the amount of sun needed to make enough vitamin D is always less than the higher amounts that cause tanning or sunburn. These high amounts can increase the risk of skin cancer.
Sensible sun protection shouldn’t prevent you producing enough vitamin D.'
The full report may be downloaded from the committee’s website – www.comare.org.uk.

Re: help me reply to this Professor

Did you see who was on COMARE's panel? Two of the group are also leading members of Cancer Research Uk.

Across here, the N.I. Assembly are putting through a Bill based on COMARE's report. They are totally ignoring all other reports.

The Deputy chairperson on the Health committee ( Michelle O'Neill) uses our beds lol !!!!

When we tackled her on this she stated that it wasn't her position, but it was her party's.

And todays' Daily Mail doesn't help!
