H1N1 Shot and Vitamin D

Dr. Michael Wegmann's Thoughts

What Should You Do?

I strongly advise against getting any flu shot, and that includes the swine flu shot. Educating yourself on this issue is becoming more important than ever before. Studies have estimated that only 1 to 10 percent of all side effects, including deaths, are ever reported, so the numbers in existence are very deceptive and in no way gives you a realistic view of the true impact of all these vaccinations.

The flu vaccine, consumed faithfully by the public without question each year, is not without problems.

The vaccine contains formaldehyde, a known cancer-causing agent. It also contains the preservative thimerosal, a derivative of mercury, a known neurotoxin linked to brain damage and autoimmune diseases. Aluminum is another flu vaccine ingredient and is also a toxic heavy metal that has been associated with an increased incidence of Alzheimer's Disease.

ACCORDING TO HUGH FUDENBURG, MD - the world's leading immunogenetisit and 13th most quoted biologist of our time (nearly 850 papers in peer review journals) - If an individual has had 5 consecutive flu shots between 1970 - 1980 (the years of the study) his/her chance of developing Alzheimer's Disease is 10 times greater than if they had 1, two or no shots. When asked why Dr. Fudenberg stated that it is due to the mercury and aluminum buildup that is in EVERY flu shot (and in almost all childhood shots). The gradual mercury and aluminum buildup in the brain causes cognitive dysfunction. ALZHEIMERS is now expected to QUADRUPLE.

Dr. Fudenberg's comments are from his speech at the NVIC International Vaccine Conference, Arlington VA September, 1997.
Alzheimers to quadruple statement is from the John's Hopkins Newsletter of November 1998.

Three other serious adverse reactions to the flu vaccine are joint inflammation and arthritis, anaphylactic shock (and other life-threatening allergic reactions), and Guillain-Barré syndrome, a paralytic autoimmune disease. Recently Dr. Oz mentioned Guillian-Barre syndrome in his interview, where he said his wife and children will not be getting the swine flu vaccine. Most people do not die from the flu, they die from pneumonia. I challenge anyone to find a relevant study that proves the vaccine stops the flu. The studies just don't exist.

The most important Vitamin to combat the flu: Vitamin D

Vitamin D, “the sunshine vitamin,” may very well be one of the most beneficial vitamins there is for disease prevention. Unfortunately it’s also one of the vitamins that a vast majority of people across the world are deficient in due to lack of regular exposure to sunshine.

Published in the journal Epidemiology and Infection in 2006, the hypothesis presented by Dr. John Cannell and colleagues in the paper Epidemic Influenza and Vitamin D actually makes a lot of sense.

They raise the possibility that influenza is a symptom of vitamin D deficiency!

The vitamin D formed when your skin is exposed to sunlight regulates the expression of more than 2,000 genes throughout your body, including ones that influence your immune system to attack and destroy bacteria and viruses. Hence, being overwhelmed by the “flu bug” could signal that your vitamin D levels are too low, allowing the flu virus to overtake your immune system.

At least five studies show an inverse association between lower respiratory tract infections and 25(OH)D levels. That is, the higher your vitamin D level, the lower your risk of contracting colds, flu, and other respiratory tract infections:

1. A 2007 study suggests higher vitamin D status enhances your immunity to microbial infections. They found that subjects with vitamin D deficiency had significantly more days of absence from work due to respiratory infection than did control subjects.

2. A 2009 study on vitamin D deficiency in newborns with acute lower respiratory infection (ALRI) confirmed a strong, positive correlation between newborns’ and mother’s vitamin D levels. Over 87 percent of all newborns and over 67 percent of all mothers had vitamin D levels lower than 20 ng/ml, which is a severe deficiency state.

Newborns with vitamin D deficiency appear to have an increased risk of developing ALRI, and since the child’s vitamin D level strongly correlates withits mother’s, the researchers recommend that all mothers’ optimize their vitamin D levels during pregnancy, especially in the winter months, to safeguard their baby’s health.

3. A similar Indian study published in 2004 also reported that vitamin D deficiency in infants significantly raised their odds ratio for having severe ALRI.

4. A 2009 analysis of the Third National Health andNutrition Examination Survey examined the association between vitamin D levelsand recent upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) in nearly 19,000 subjectsover the age of 12.

There are three mains ways to get vitamin D.

1. Regular sun exposure. For many of my patients this is not possible in the winter months which may explain why the flu is associated with the fall and winter months.

2. Oral Vitamin D. Most people do not supplement with enough Vit D. The minimum amount needed is 3000 units per day for the average abult.

3. Safe exposure in tanning beds. What does this mean? Not laying in the bed until you fry. Safe tanning occurs in most people between 3 and 6 minutes in a tanning bed. Burning is a sign you went too long.
