Questions from a newbie seeking benefits of tanning/Vit. D...

I have long suspected I could have a Vit. D deficiency. I live in Michigan so I get no sun from Oct. thru April. Also, my mom has MS... my dad had colon cancer (which can all be attributed to a D deficiency). I myself have suffered from some anxiety/depression in the winter. Now I'm pregnant and have learned so much about Vit D and am trying to take control......

My questions....
What are your thoughts on pregnancy/tanning for the D benefit? I have found it really lifts my spirits but I don't want to do damage.

What tanning bed is best for receiving Vit D? I know the UV-B rays are the only ones that can create Vit D.

Has anyone treated depression with Vit D thru tanning and how much/how often did you have to go?

I have experimented with one 10 min session once/week. I think it helps a little. I don't want my baby to be deficient either, and I think pregnant moms need more D!

Re: Questions from a newbie seeking benefits of tanning/Vit. D...

You ask EXCELLENT question.

Long story short, use whatever bed you feel comfortable in. They will all work for Vitamin D production. The "dangers" of tanning while with child is from dehydration and overheating. Just make sure you drink a bottle of water (or so) before tanning and don't go the whole time. All you should need to do is 50-60% of the max tan time to get your Vitamin D.

I'd say 3-4 times a week would be no problem.

You are 100% correct on your thought process BTW. You do need more D but that doesn't mean become Ms Tan USA. Just 1/2 sessions a few times a week is very good for overall well being. Just use a tanning lotion to keep your skin in top shape and you'll be mint.
