Call it corporate lifestyle disease

Exec lifestyle: Lose out on vitamins
20 May 2008, 0308 hrs IST,Madhavi Rajadhyaksha,TNN

MUMBAI: A normal day in the life of Panvel resident Sushil Kulkarni is like just another mid-level corporate executive's. He travels to his Belapur office early every morning in an air-conditioned car and spends the entire day in his cabin. Kulkarni, who works in a topnotch company, was thoroughly surprised when the in-house doctor asked him to modify his routine and "bask in the sun for at least a few minutes."

Executives like Kulkarni, who barely get any exposure to sun thanks to their 7 am to 7 pm work schedule, are facing an unexpected fallout of their long hours in office.

Call it corporate lifestyle disease, but many are developing vitamin deficiencies, particularly vitamin D3, which is essentially sourced from the ultraviolet rays of the sun and is necessary for strong bones.

"Considering we are a tropical country with bountiful sunlight, we shouldn't have vitamin D3 deficiencies. But we find that executives travel in their cars with tinted windows and mostly work indoors. Long office hours rarely allow them to exercise or get any exposure to sun," said Dr Shyam Pingle, vice president of the Indian Association of Occupational Health (IAOH), an NGO which works to make offices healthy and safe.

Quoting from a 2007 issue of the Indian Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Dr Pingle said that 75 male office executives in a suburban Mumbai office were tracked and their blood analysed for vitamin levels.

They found that 65% executives had vitamin B12 deficiency (less than 193 pg/ml) and 28% executives had vitamin D deficiency (less than 7.6 ng/ml).

City doctors say changes in and lifestyle can do wonders, though supplements may be necessary for some. Executives could step out of their office during breaks instead of hanging around corridors.

"Early morning sun is good and it's best for office-goers to spend a few minutes outside," said a physician at Jaslok Hospital, Dr Altaf Patel, adding that bone thinning is lesser among active people and office-goers must do some form of aerobic exercises.

"Corporate offices should compulsorily have to streamline the nutritional content in canteens," suggested occupational health expert at Saifee Hospital and emeritus professor of KEM Hospital Dr J C Kothari, adding that while vitamin D is more important in formative years, a particular subset of people, such as women clad in burqas, could have vitamin D deficiencies.

Some people like Chembur resident Raj Agarwal learnt this the hard way. "Many people could be suffering from vitamin deficiencies but don't realise it," rued the 45-year-old who has been doling out essentials as coffee table conversation after he suffered both Vitamin D3 and B12 deficiencies.

A father-of-two, Agarwal said he started worrying about his frequent bouts of amnesia. He was put through a battery of tests - an MRI and ECG - but it was a showing vitamin B12 levels, which provided easy answers.
