Moving south could help keep you from developing cancer

They don't mention tanning beds but of course it's another option!

Creighton study links Vitamin D to lower cancer risk

Moving south could help keep you from developing cancer, but so could a trip to the local pharmacy, according to Creighton University professor of medicine, Joan Lappe, Ph.D., R.N.

Lappe, of Council Bluffs, was principal investigator for landmark research Creighton's School of Medicine conducted regarding vitamin D. The research indicated postmenopausal women taking calcium and three times the U.S. government's recommended daily dose of vitamin D3 showed a 60 percent or greater reduction in cancer risk than women who did not take the vitamin.
"We have known for some time that people who live in warmer climates have less cancer and a lower risk of dying from the disease," Lappe said.
Researchers suspected there could be a vitamin D3 connection, since the body naturally produces it when exposed to sunlight. Lappe, who holds the Criss/Beirne Endowed Chair in Creighton's School of Nursing, said the university's research confirmed the connection, at least in postmenopausal women.
She said further studies are needed to determine whether the Creighton research results apply to other populations, including men, women of all ages and different ethnic groups. While the study was open to all ethnic groups, all participants were Caucasian, Lappe said.
"The findings are very exciting. They confirm what a number of vitamin D proponents have suspected for some time but that, until now, have not been substantiated through clinical trial," she said. "Vitamin D is a critical tool in fighting cancer as well as many other diseases."
But, getting enough of the vitamin is a challenge for northerners. Lappe said people living at latitudes north of the 37th parallel - Council Bluffs is near the 41st parallel - cannot get their vitamin D naturally during the winter months because of the sun's angle.
"(In this part of the country) you could sit out in your swimsuit for hours in the winter and not increase your vitamin D level," Lappe said.
Another challenge is that, while 10-15 minutes per day in a bright summer sun can create large amounts of the vitamin, the sun's ultraviolet B rays can also cause skin cancer. Sunscreens block out the rays but also the vitamin D3 effect, Lappe said.
A Harvard University study indicated 60 percent of Americans are vitamin D-deficient. Lappe said in addition to cancer, the deficiency could also increase their chances of developing high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, diabetes mellitus, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and other diseases.
While moving south may be an option for some, a drive to a local pharmacy is another way to get vitamin D3, Lappe said. She said multiple vitamins do not have sufficient amounts of D3 and suggested getting a vitamin D3 supplement. Vitamin D-fortified milk and salmon raised in the wild are also sources. Tanning booth ultraviolet B rays are also a source; but, as with sunlight, skin damage can be a concern, Lappe said. Other Creighton researchers involved in the study included Robert Recker, M.D.; Robert Heaney, M.D.; Dianne Travers-Gustafson, M.S.; K. Michael Davies, PhD; and Gleb Haynatzki, PhD.

Re: Moving south could help keep you from developing cancer

Why would anyone say go into a tanning bed for Vitamin D when EVEN THE TANNING INDUSTRY doesn't say this. They can't. When they CLAIM they do it's an internal memo.

Like Feb is Vitamin D month. Sent only to the salons....we know already. EVERY MONTH is Vitamin D month in a tanning salon.

Our tanners don't need to be told either. They know already.
