Rep Power: 35 | Big Year for Sunshine Vitamin Big year for the 'sunshine vitamin' Studies in the early part of 2007 linked vitamin D to reduced cancer risk. A paper released in January credited a combination of calcium and vitamin D3 -- which comes from animal sources and seems to be more active than plant-derived vitamin D2 - as having a substantial effect on the occurrence of cancer. Two studies that came out the next month linked higher blood levels of vitamin D to lower rates of breast cancer and colorectal cancer cases. The growing body of scientific evidence, and the fact that solar rays -- the natural source of vitamin D -- are weaker in the fall and winter due to Canada's northern latitude, prompted the Canadian Cancer Society to recommend it as a supplement. In June, the society advised the entire adult population of Canada begin taking 1,000 international units (IU) of vitamin D a day during the fall and winter -- a first for a cancer agency. While some experts called the move groundbreaking, others said the recommendations are premature and more research was needed. Another study, released in October, reinforced the vitamin's reputation as a colorectal cancer preventative, but also found it didn't appear to affect the chances of dying from other types of cancer.
