Cancer study sparks mini-vitamin D frenzy

MONTREAL — Vitamin D pills are apparently flying off the shelves in Montreal. The rush follows publication of a new study indicating that high doses of the vitamin can reduce the risk of developing some common cancers.
At one Montreal drug store, staff said they were cleared out of Vitamin D Saturday.
Pharmacist Ann Labreque also said she had three or four requests for information, which is a lot more than she would normally receive.
At another, staff had sold all 12 bottles of vitamin D in the 1,000 international unit dose, but still had a few bottles with 400 international unit capsules. (International units, or IUs, are used to measure drugs and vitamins and depend on the potency of the substance.)
But one pharmacist said he’s seen no vitamin D frenzy, and he’d like more information about the study.
“I would like to read more about it,” Harry Schneider observed.
The four-year, randomized study followed 1,179 healthy, post-menopausal women from rural eastern Nebraska.
Those taking vitamin D and calcium showed a 60 per cent decrease in cancer risk, including breast, lung and colon cancers, compared to women who didn’t take it. Results were reported in the June 8 online edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
There is, however, plenty of the vitamin D around from the sun and food. It is produced naturally after exposure to sunlight and is also available in such foods as oily fish, margarine and meat.
As a result of recent studies, the Canadian Cancer Society recommends that Canadian adults take 1,000 international units of vitamin D daily during fall and winter to reduce cancer risk.
Vitamin D should be taken year round by by the elderly, people with dark skin and those who do not get much direct sunlight, the cancer society said.

Hmmmmmmm? I wonder no one can ever tell you how much is never enough when it comes to direct sunlight exposure?
