Rep Power: 26 | Doug: Another good article supporting our industry! Several points are worth repeating: 1. "The skin has an enormous capacity for vitamin D production and supplies the body with 80-100% of its requirements of vitamin D." Comment 1. Keep in mind that (1) there is no toxicity involved with the cutaneous production of vitamin D and there is with the ingested form, and, (2) Mother Nature wouldn't have given us this marvelous capability of producing vitamin D if she didn't want us to use it! 2. Age, latitude, time of day, season of the year and pigmentation can dramatically affect the production of vitamin D in the skin." Comment 2. We can't do anything about the reduced vitamin D production associated with age, but tanning indoors eliminates the problems associated with time of day and season of the year. Also, this article points out that darker skin types need MORE exposure to UVR in order to produce the same amount of vitamin D. 3. "Hypovitaminosis D is a common feature in elderly people living in northern latitudes and skin coverage has been established as an important factor leading to vitamin D deficiency." Comment 3. Once the value of PROTECTIVE PIGMENTATION is understood and accepted by the public, an important "side benefit" will be the reduction of sub-optimal levels of vitamin D. Imagine the benefits to society (in reduced medical costs) if more people over 50 would visit a tanning salon 2 or 3 times each week! Don |

Rep Power: 21 | Please remember that a tanning bed is a class 2 medical device. If we as an industry keep pushing vitamin D production and all the good it dose we maybe pushing ourselves right out of business. At any time, the FDA can reclassify the beds to a class 1 medical device and then only a doctor and medical personal will be able to operate it. |

Rep Power: 0 | Get the article from the assiciated press...buy the rights...we have had huge news with Vit.D and how it helps prevent cancer...wake up! If you do not get this article and give it to your clients and send it to the general public, then you should not complain when your markets tanning population continues to go down because of lack of education....consumers have only heard the negative for soooo many years with not one response...we have it now, and what is your plan? |
