Rep Power: 0 | The national post gave a great article on the benefits of sunlight today. The title was: MOST CANADIANS LACK VITAMIN D. The story is written by a Brad Evenson and his e-mail address is bevenson@nationalpost.com. I believe that it is imperative to e-mail him expressing our gratitude for his factual article. Most Canadians lack Vitamin D, Study concludes SHORTAGE FOUND IN 97% People advised to use supplements to compensate for long winter The long Canadian winter leaves most of us with an unhealthy shortage of vitamin D, the Hormone credited with preventing osteoporosis and fighting some cancers. University of Calgary researchers found 97% of healthy people they studied had insufficient levels of the vitamin sometimes during the year, which could lead to thinning bones and fractures. The study, published today in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, says people of all ages should consider using vitamin supplements. ‘Whatever the optimal intake of vitamin D is, we’re not currently “THE HORMONE HELPS THE BODY ABSORB CALCIUM” Meeting it for most Canadians, ‘says co-author David Hanley, a professor of medicine at the University of Calgary. Vitamin D is a hormone that helps the body absorb calcium, which strengthens bones. People obtain it in their diet and by synthesizing it their skin after exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Since few foods contain vitamin D, and fortification of milk and other products can be unreliable, the best source is sunlight. But between late October and March, sunlight is not enough for most Canadians. ‘The sun comes in at more of an angle and the atmosphere filters out most of the Ultraviolet B rays that you need,” Dr. Hanley says. “So during the late fall and early spring, regardless of the whether you’re not going to make appreciable quantities of vitamin D.” Last month, U.S. scientists said vitamin D might help prevent colon cancer by detoxifying the body’s own digestive products. Other tests at McGill University also showed the vitamin arrested the growth of malignant cells from breast and prostate tumors. Lack of vitamin D has been held responsible for the re-emergence of rickets in parts of North America. In the latest study, Dr. Hanley and researcher Diana Rucker followed 188 healthy Calgarians aged 27 to 89 for a year, taking their blood every three months. During the summer months, most participants were fine. But in the fall and winter, their vitamin D levels plunged to levels that put them at increased risk of osteoporosis. “The thing about Calgary is that it’s at quite a bit higher elevation than most of Canada’s other major cities, and that puts us that much closer to getting ultraviolet light,” Dr. Hanley says. “So if Calgarians are getting low levels of vitamin D, that means it’s probably a problem elsewhere.” Dr. Hanley says people do not need to sunbathe for hours; just 15 to 30 minutes of exposure on the face, hands and forearms a day is enough. Although foods rich in vitamin D, such as cod liver oil, have been used to treat bone disease since the 1700s, the medical community has never agreed on a suitable daily amount of vitamin D. The current recommendation for adults in Canada is 200 IU ( inter-national units) A day, the amount in two full glasses of fortified milk. But experts say that is far too low to ensure healthy bones. “In fact, current recommendations for vitamin D are not designed to ensure anything,” say Dr. Reinhold Vieth, director of the bone and Mineral Laboratory at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. “They are simply based on the old, default strategy for setting a nutritional guideline, which is to recommend an amount of nutrient similar to what healthy people are eating.” In a commentary in the medical journal, Dr. Vieth says the Calgary study demonstrates the fact most healthy Canadians are not getting nearly enough vitamin D. He and other experts believe adults should consume a daily supplement with 1,000 IU of vitamin D a day. So I e-mailede him... Dear Mr. Evenson I applaud you on your article and wonder if you realize what you have stepped into. The medical world has known for centuries now about the healthy beneficial effects of sunlight. Modern medicine has been proving these "thoughts" for the past number of years. But the problem exists in that there is what we refer to as the "sunscare coalition". This coalition is made up of those professions and businesses who reap massive financial rewards by scaring people out of the sun. Dermatologists alone earn an estimated 12.5 BILLION dollars a year from the treatment of psoriasis (BILLIONS more from acne treatments) while the make-up companies earn hundreds of billions of dollars from the sale of fake suntan creams and misleading sun protection lotions and scare women out of sunshine so that they will continually NEED to apply makeup rather than content themselves with the healthy golden appearance of a light tan. A tan is nature's own SPF. Make up companies scare the public from the sun and advocate the use of their SPF creams which at best sweat off the tanners skin within minutes, rendering the protection useless as opposed to a natural tan's ability to provide an SPF that does not wash off and will actually strengthen in effectiveness with added, controlled exposure, and will diminish in days to weeks after exposure has ceased... rather than the minutes DURING exposure. There are one thousand (1000) people in North America who will die from underexposure to sunlight for every one (1) who will die from overexposure. The indoor tanning industry is the only industry that promotes the ideals of avoidance of both overexposure AND underexposure to UV light. The sunscare coalition has been advocating total sunlight avoidance and touting the banner of no tan is a safe tan. This stance is both biologically incorrect as well as being totally irresponsible. The medical community advocates the beneficial effects of sunlight far far far more than it delineates the harmful effects of UV expossure. That is solely because proportionately some exposure is so much healthier than no exposure. So why do we hear so much negativety about sunlight and tanning salons ?? MONEY. pure and simple greed on the part of Dermatologists and make-up companies who would sacrafice the health of Canadians for the almighty dollar. There is so much proof out there that could be used to expose this coalition and I truly hope that you could see the validity in doing so. I have been at this for 17 years and could tell you horror stories about the Canadian Cancer Society's stance on this subject. If you could give this article a little chance you might see an opening to a whole study evolve. You could literally save the lives of thousands of Canadians by opening their eyes to the scam that the sunscare coalition has played on the general public all in the name of corporate finance. Again I praise you on a job well done and hope that you do not stop at what should be the first paragraph of a long story. I remain. Mori Goldlist per ZOE INTERNATIONAL I hope that each one reading this will follow suit and send off an e-mail thanking this man for his support... NOT only of this industry but of the health of all North Americans that would otherwise suffer if they did not know that there is an opposing view to the sunscare coalition. It is time that we throw our support to those that are willing to tell the world the truth the way we see it. As much as we are being led to believe that we should be concentrating our efforts to staving off small and large attacks by the implimentation of restrictive government policies, the root of the matter is getting the powers to be to see the validity of our stance in the healthful beneficial effects of MODERATE UV exposure rather than the self serving deadly wrong approach of total sun abstinence as espoused by the sunscare coalition. Both of our stances are motivated by money but OUR stance will also benefit the health of North Americans while the stance of the sunscare coalition will be detrimental to the health of hundreds of thousands. PLEASE PLEASE e-mail a congratulations to this man, he deserves it and hopefully, if he sees validity in continuing, as proven in the number of positive responses, he will examine further into our battle and come out swinging on our behalf. Rep Power: 0 | Thanks guys, my purpose in all this is to try to make you realize that although you have those laws in efect in the US which prevent you from laying claim to healthy beneficial effects derived from UV exposure, the fact is that the law is wrong in this! The only way to break that law and gain recognition is to advance as much as possible any and all articles espousing positive effects and if any of you have the guts, BREAK THE LAW !!! HAVE SOMEONE SUE YOU FOR SUGGESTING THAT SUNLIGHT IS GOOD FOR HUMANS. If you are sued, everyone in this industry will come to your side because if you fail, we all lose!!! I understand that this exact situation was played out with folic acid in the US and the makers of the follic acid WON. We can win also and when we do we have the world to gain By e-mailing congratulations to Mr. Evenson, we show him our support but also, when his editor sees the tremendous response he may ask Mr. Evenson to continue in this and he may become our champion. SO IT IS VITAL THAT WE SEND AS MANY E-MAILS OF CONGRATULATIONS TO SHOW OUR SUPPORT AND OUR VOICE. |
