Is Tanning A Sign Of Skin Damage?

FYI:

This post was "hidden" in another on this board. I decided to bring it out into the open because it may be of interest to some of you.

Don

Christine:

I've had productive conversations with several reporters for major media outlets recently and I'm happy to report that they (the media) are starting to understand that there is a HUGE difference between the "positive" impact of "suntanning" and the "negative" impact of "sunburning" on the human body.

[You may be interested in "Avoid Sun Avoidance" and "Avoid Sun Avoidance, #2" that I have posted in the forum on the TSO website where I cover what I have summarized below in greater detail.]

The "primary" difference (I point out to the reporters) is that, as shown by an article published in a recent issue of the Journal of Trauma, "burned" skin loses most of it's ability to produce vitamin D. Tanned skin, on the other hand, is not only capable of producing vitamin D, it has ENHANCED vitamin D production ability and this fact is "proof positive" that the oft-repeated statement by the anti-tanning segment of the dermatology community that "tanning is a sign of skin damage" is false, deceptive, misleading and scientifically unsubstantiated!

The KISS! (Keep it Simple Smith!) summary is that we should all make sure our customers (and ourselves!) understand that IF tanning was a sign of skin damage (as stated by the dermatology community), tanned skin would not be able to produce vitamin D. Since tanned skin is perfectly capable of producing vitamin D, this proves that tanning is nothing more (and nothing less) than a natural, normal (and contravolitional) adaptive reaction to UVR exposure by the human body.

Don't EVER sunburn (OVEREXPOSURE)!

Avoid Sun Avoidance (UNDEREXPOSURE)!

Hope this helps.

Don

Thank-you Don..
May we print things from your site..or is there a manual we can purchase from your organization to have on hand at our faclities?

When will you be holding classes on these subjects? Is there away we can get information on how we can attend seminars you teach?

Christine:

I'm sending you some information with your "customized" skin typing/subtyping and informed consent forms.

Last fall, I was approached by several vendors exploring the idea of conducting a series of ADVANCED training sessions for tanning salon owners around the country. Where it broke down was that I wanted to limit it to "elite" tanning salon owners who had been in business for at least one year and the "potential sponsors" didn't want to limit attendance. Thus, this "quantity" over "quality" debate ended the discussions.

The way we had it planned was to have the sponsors cover all of the expenses (including my travel) and the attendees would make a nominal contribution to help support the UVR Research Institute (I offered to "contribute" my time at no charge).

I guess the question is, how many tanning salon owners are interested in attending a VERY advanced training session? (Or would you all rather have this information in a "book" format?)

Don

PS: Tanning salon owners have "blanket" permission to reprint information from the TSO website. The reason we "protect" this information is to prevent unauthorized commercial use.

I would think any salon owner who had the desire for advanced knowledge would be in the "elite" group.
