The reason for face tanning lamps in beds is because the lamps used in tanning beds are the low wattage "100 watt" made for inexpensive home use, that use the less inexpensive ballast's which are really the big cost of the equipment and make up the largest cost of any bed or booth. The 100 watt lamps are not a high enough out put at the ends to tan the face well.so to make up for this the face lamps are used to make up for the deficiency of the 100 watt lamps. The 160 watt lamps used in most booths and a few tanning beds do to heat problems with the bed design, are of high enough out put from end to end to tan the entire body evenly, face as well. The 100 watt lamps just aren't effective enough to do a head to toe even result, hence facial bulbs are used as a supplement. That is one of the reasons clients and owners prefer tanning booths. They are the original 160 watt lamp units. The high pressure lamps used as facial lamps need filter glass to protect the skin from high levels of uvb and uvc that the bulbs emit, this is scary because if the filter fails , breaks ,or someone replaces it with regular glass, the rays from the lamps are very dangerous. The part of the uva spectrum that the high pressure lamps use are a controversy now that wolff has invented a new low pressure uva lamp that is said tonot use the spectrum peek that high pressure lamps use because that is the part of the spectrum that causes aging of the skin.Simply they are uses to supplement the weak 100 watt lamps used in beds.
