First of all: I applaud you on your MacGyver skills!
On the Merv: 1-4 grades are what are in basic air conditioner filters, and 5-8 are generally used for anything from commercial buildings to factories so 7 should be fine unless you are
spray tanning within some pretty hazardous places!
