I am betting its a card read error. Had the exact same problem here. When you swipe the car, does it stick on the read screen but full of data (the plastic strip info). If so, when you hit enter or swipe again does it crash? Thats what happens to us. We found out readers were positioned too low on the screen and as employees swiped the card they pulled them out at a curve.

If after swiping the card it does not run the transaction, hit escape and then F5 again, select credit card and swipe it more carefully. Do not just swipe the card again, must escape and F5 again.
