Re: Vitamin D may lessen the pain for those on Arimidex/Breast Cancer
Also, a recent study showed that women (and men) with breast cancer that are in the highest quintile of vitamin D (25-OH-D) have a better survival rate (>70%) than the women (and men) in the lowest quintile.
So attaining/maintaining an optimal level (>120 nmol/L) of vitamin D helps to prevent breast cancer; increases survival time for those who have breast cancer; and reduces bone pain for those being treated (as shown above) for breast cancer with Arimidex. If this win-win-win information isn't enough to cause all "smart" women to head for their local tanning salon, I don't know what is.
BTW, a new study by Liu (Holick's group), et al, showed that there is a 1% increase in vitamin D for every minute spent in a tanning bed for the first five weeks (three sessions per week) and then it levels off. The "increase" was 150% from "baseline" which means that someone with a 50 nmol/L level would increase to 125 nmol/L during these 15 sessions. Yes, you read this correctly. The study WAS done in a tanning bed (i.e., the 100w Tan America and Puretan sunbeds that I got Peter & Julie Demetroulas (Tan America) and Roger Brown (Puretan) to donate to Dr. Holick a few years ago). The last I heard, Wolff and Cosmedico sunlamps were being used. The study (in the March, 2008 issue of the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research) concludes that "Exposure to lamps taht emit UVB is an excellent source for producing vitamin D3 in the skin and is especially efficacious in patients with fat malabsorption syndrome."
