Re: Tanning for psoriasis

I am licensed in skin care for over 25 yrs which comes in very handy for skin conditions, yes high uvb helps, in fact we have 2 beds with high uvb just for people with issues, i tan them longer than i normally would for their skin type, they actually have to have the areas affected burn a little bit, so if i would put a non issue person in that same bed light-med skin i might start at 8 mins but the psoriasis person i might go 11, this condition usually flares up for the person if they are under stress or in ill health or a smoker, this is not a cure but if they get get a handle on whats causing the flare up the tanning bed can help the skin build up if and only if it gets a bit over expoused, most derms and mds have a light therapy booth but it uses a different light spectrum then what we use, so treatment differs as well.
Make sure the topical corti steriods they use r not on them as most have a mineral oil base and we all know how that kills our beds. Most will see some improvement in 1 session but must keep it up to keep the benefit up, knees, elbows and scalp are most common. these people are not typical tanners so they really need a different approach, high UVA will not do them really any good, they go in base beds, most won't lotion and come maybe 1 time a week. I have asked them " r u here to tan today or for psoriasis" and some in fact will try a tanning bed once they get their skin under control, some people are ashamed of this because it can very unslightly, if u bring it out in the open , make it no big deal and let them know we deal all day long with the largest organ of the body and we are experts and we can help it usually leads to long term tanning relationships, be it not too profitable but a happy customer it worth alot.
