Stan is correct. We seem to have forgotten that a photo-protective tan is our "birthright" and the reason most people patronize us.
That does not mean that vitamin D isn't important - especially in the future - but simply that it may be wise to talk about the benefits of facultative pigmentation first and then talk about the secondary benefits of vitamin D, looking good and feeling good.
We have (IMHO) let the derm's convince the public that a tan only provides minimal protection when the facts (and our common sense) tells us otherwise. A base tan does provide protection!
The "bottom line" is that an individual who keeps a tan year-round gets the benefits of protecting his/her skin from UVR overexposure AND gets the "freebie" of helping to maintain an optimal level of vitamin D. As I see it, that is a "win-win" situation.
