“Shedding Light on Osteoporosis'
Dr. John Pittman to Address Link Between Sun Avoidance and Osteoporosis in August Issue of Boom! MagazineTriangle - RALEIGH, NC – July 31, 2007 – In the August issue of Boom! Magazine, John C. Pittman, M.D., Founder and Director of The Carolina Center for Integrative Medicine, explains that the rise in osteoporosis over the last 20 years may be attributed to sunscreens and sun avoidance. The article, entitled “Shedding Light on Osteoporosis”, references studies published by The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, which states that the prevalence of low Vitamin D in the general population is alarmingly high.
Vitamin D is manufactured naturally from exposure to sunlight. Many factors have contributed to reduced Vitamin D levels in the average individual—most notably is the reduced time spent in the sun, the use of high quality sunscreens as advocated by dermatologists to protect from sunburn and skin cancer, and the lack of intake of dietary sources. Dr. Pittman explains that evidence indicates that both calcium and Vitamin D are beneficial in protecting the skeleton, particularly when these two nutrients are used in combination.
“Each nutrient is necessary for the full expression of the effect of the other, and where their actions are independent, their effects on skeletal health are complementary,” explains Dr. Pittman. “Nutrient status for both tends to be deficient in the adult population of the industrialized nations; hence, supplementation or food fortification with both nutrients is appropriate and, given contemporary diets and sun exposure, probably necessary.”
Boom! Magazine is the only lifestyle magazine in the Triangle that specifically targets the baby boomer and their parents. The monthly magazine offers a vigorous new image of Phase II living and includes topics such as health and wellness, financial news, living well, and lifestyle and entertainment. The magazine’s publisher, Barbara Petty, said that the depth and breadth of information available to her readers makes this a premiere magazine that “inspires, motivates, educates, and delights” by encouraging readers to “Live Smart; Live Well; and Live Large.” More information about Boom! Magazine can be found by visiting www.boomnc.com
Dr. Pittman says that he is pleased to be able to share this information with Boom! readers. “Health care professionals and the general public need to be aware of the importance Vitamin D and calcium,” adds Dr. Pittman. “Numerous other benefits have been attributed to these two important nutrients, including the substantial reduction of all cancer risks in postmenopausal women. It’s not just about our bones anymore.”
