Re: Could I get an experienced mgr for $40k a year?
I would assume it depends on where you are in the Chicago area, also. How are you advertising? I am very serious that, I would bet there are small salon owners that are very good at customer service, product knowledge, etc. that are struggling and looking for a change. For $40,000 (combination of base, commission, incentives, etc.) you should be able to attract one of them. Timing may be an issue, though.
Have you explored your current customer base? Perhaps there is a regular customer that you are familiar with that would be good. The problem here is, you lose a customer. They now tan for free. And if it doesn't work out, they will go somewhere else and tan.
Competition have anyone that you could steal away? Already trained and doing a good job?
I don't like cattle calls but sometimes that is all you have left. Advertise the job in the paper, unemployment office, etc. and be prepared to sort through hundreds of applications and applicants to get down to a very few that are acceptable, if you get lucky.
