"Once a lamp is ignited and gets some hours on it, the phosphors deteriorate over time and even if you use it for the first 6 mo. to a year and do not use it for three years after that the lamps will still need changing out.
New lamps that are never lit will last in storage virtually forever. They just go bad over time once used."
