Most glass tubes used in tanning lamps are the exact same as those used in fluorescent bulbs, and are inherently designed
to filter out UV rays. Since they are so inefficient when it comes to UV transmission, they need to be loaded up with both
power (wattage) and UVA phosphors to have an effect on the skin. The “overpowering” required to blast enough UV rays
through the glass tube’s built-in filter is the main factor that degrades a conventional lamp’s performance and operating life.
