The timer brain and key pad are very expensive for these units and are know to have problems. Most of the time when you replace the timer brain you need to replace the key pad also because they need to match up. I would just do as you said and put a 3A timer in for this room to save you money. You will need to move your phone wire now where ever you want your switch and also have a 2 conductor wire going from the T-max to the back of your unit to the by-pass.
