10 minutes is very high for a new, fair skinned tanner to start. I've seen one person get very red when one of my employees made the same mistake, and she's been retrained on following exposure charts. As mentioned, go to a salon Smart Tan certified. Look at the bed's exterior and make sure they're very close to following the exposure (e.g. if you truly haven't tanned, and it's a 20 minute bed, a fair skinned person is going to be about 3-5 minutes).
For
spray tanning , it really depends upon your goals. If it's to get a tan for some outside fun later, UV. If it's for the cosmetic appeal of a golden tan only, then the spray makes sense.
After care moisturizers will help your tan last longer and in certain cases anti-aging ingredients (such as Designer Skin's Boutique collection). A trained staff should help you pick.
