hey... if you're trying to lose body fat, definately try to avoid eating for about 3 hours before you workout... I've even been told to avoid any type of 'power' drink or bar, because then when you work out, you'll be burning off the calories from the food and not the body fat...
On a personal note, in my experience if I eat food within 2 hours of working out, especially if it has dairy (I don't know why this is... one doctor said I may I have a mild food allergy), I'll get really bad side cramps usually 6-12 minutes into my workout.
