There is propriety code build into Helios that relates directly to the Star printer. Some other printers will work (in Star mod) but VERY few of these will also work with a Cash Drawer.
One desirable option is the use the Star Thermal printer TSP200 series .... better in my opinion than the Dot Matrix printers that you describe as horrible.
Regardless of which model you choice ... you MUST use the Windows Generic Text Only print driver NOT any Star driver ... and DO NO change the name from Generic Text Only when (or after) installing the printer in Windows

I am a little lost on your question about electrical cash drawer vs a money tray in drawer ... most cash drawers from POS World will work .... BUT IT MUST have the Star Interface.
